The brooch is a Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Western Group), Mackreth 2011, 5.b4. P.late 50. The brooch is made from cast copper alloy and is incomplete. Looking at the front of the brooch in plan, the brooch has long cylindrical wings which terminate with caps that are perforated by a single hole. In one of the holes the end of a copper alloy axis bar can be clearly seen; the opposing wing cap however, is slightly damaged around its perimeter (not recent breaks) making the axis bar more difficult to see.
