An incomplete copper alloy Colchester two-piece brooch. Most of its pin and just over half its spring is missing. The wings are semi-circular with an integral double-pierced lug. The spring is secured by passing the external chord and the axis bar through the lug. Part of the axis bar survives within the three coils of spring that survive, and it passes through the lower piercing in the lug before it breaks. The pin is broken after 10mm at one end, and at the other end is broken possibly before another coil, which then would have bent upwards to thread through the upper piercing. The …

From c.30mm from the foot, the rib is decorated with tiny ?horizontal/ ?diagonal incised lines, and the rib becomes less pronounced as it reaches the foot, emphasising the grooves on either side. The foot is a very tiny semi-circular projection (1mm wide), with three deep…

Lower bow and foot fragment from a Roman bow brooch of indeterminate type. The lower bow has an oval section and was decorated with a raised central rib and decorated with short incised transverse lines. The bow has a gentle curve and tapers to the foot. The eroded remnants of the catch-plate are discernible on the rear of the bow. The curved profile of the fragment suggests a Colchester-derivative brooch, perhaps of Dolphin or Polden Hill type.
