Almost complete Roman copper alloy and enamelled T-shaped brooch with hinge mechanism, missing a third of the pin (pointed end) and a little of one wing. The ?iron axis bar is still in place at the wing-break. A pierced projection extends from the top of the bow, which itself extends from the top of the wings. The wings are closed and cylindrical with a span of 30mm. The surviving wing terminal is flanked by a deep groove and two shallower grooves a little further along. The bow ends in an acanthus decoration, from which extends the leg beneath two semi circular mouldings. The leg tap…

Incomplete copper alloy and enamelled Roman T-shaped brooch with hinge mechanism, pin missing. Loop on head incomplete. The wings are short and cylindrical. The pin lug is complete but the pin is a stub. Although very worn, the wings have ?two vertical grooves. The bow extends from the front of the wings with a ring-and-dot type stud with traces of ?red enamel as the brooch curves down. Below this the bow is filled with lozenges that have now lost their enamel. At the ankle are two semi-circular mouldings above an almost circular foot, 6mm in width/ diameter. Incomplete Colchester one-piece copper alloy brooch, 68mm in length with an incomplete wingspan of 16mm. The bow is D-shaped in profile and slightly tapers to the foot, with a (broken) forward facing hook and a stump of pin-wire surviving. The wings are flat. The decoration on the bow is in a long panel extending to the 3mm wide foot. The decoration is rather worn but seems to be offset dots creating a zigzag pattern. The catchplate extends from the reverse half way down the bow but is mostly missing.

Incomplete copper alloy and enamelled (now missing) Roman brooch, bow and foot (most of catchplate missing). The brooch is very straight in profile and ends in a spherical blob at the foot (reminiscent of Hod Hill types). The bow however is very similar to a trumpet headed variety (Hattatt no.452 which is straighter in profile and no.971 which has a similar foot). A central copper alloy dot is surrounded by an area with traces of red enamel, which in turn is surrounded by a copper alloy rim and an area with traces of blue enamel, all enclosed by another copper alloy rim. This is on a f…

Incomplete and chunky copper alloy Roman brooch with a single rectangular wing, from which extends a wire loop to the top. The spring is concreted in place with probably 7 coils, and the pin is broken off. The wire curls beneath the spring which is held in place on an axis between two semicircular lugs. From the wing the bow curves outwards with a jagged edge, two semicircular cuts 8mm and 6mm long respectively being cut in both sides. Below this the foot is rectangular 10x8mm with rounded corners and a knop extending to the bottom. The catchplate extends to the reverse behind the foo…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy trumpet brooch. The head is small and circular, concealing behind it only two coils of the spring, the internal chord and the stump of the broken pin. The ends of the axis bar appear to be incomplete, with a piece of sheet metal which is open and torn at either end which appears to have been wrapped around a central core. The edges of the head are worn but appear to have had a flanged edge. The head is decorated with two diagonal lines, curving slightly outwards from the top mid-point to the lower edge on each side. The bow projects from the head with …

The lower bow and catchplate from a copper alloy Roman bow brooch. The narrow bow which is bent, is 3mm in width and 2mm in thickness at its break and the foot knob is small, with a width of 1mm. The curl of the catchplate is complete and is a semi-circle in section. The catchplate has a circular perforation with a diameter of 2mm at its centre. The brooch fragment is 37mm in length. It is likely to be from a Polden Hill type brooch. See Hattatt 1987, 98 no. 902 fig. 34 for a brooch with a similar lower bow and foot.

Peculiar incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch, with incomplete wings and head and missing its pin, catchplate and foot. The bow extends almost horizontally from the worn tubular wings, dropping down in a straightish curve. The wings seem to be broken at either end so it is not possible to determine their span. However, a now broken plate ?head extends upwards from the bow-wing join and certainly does not hide what lies behind. The reverse of the brooch has a pointed oval hollowing, deeper at its mid point and tailing off at the foot break. The decoration is two cross-hatch filled poin…

Incomplete bow brooch with ?hinge mechanism, now covered in iron corrosion. The mechanism is behind a flat head, although this is largely broken away. From below the head the bow curves slightly outwards before dropping straight down, tapering from 10mm to 6mm in width at its break. A 2mm high midrib begins as the bow drops, continuing to the break. The reverse of the bow is largely hollow. Incomplete length c.45mm. No parallel in Hattatt. Possibly 2nd century (or later?)

Incomplete copper alloy Roman T-shape brooch, hinge mechanism, missing lower bow, catchplate and most of pin. The mid-bow decoration is a two dimensional knob of three horizontal linear mouldings, with an upper and lower single horizontal linear moulding. The metal is very thin, c.0.2mm and the brooch has a raised rim around its edges, c.1mm high and the metal is a little thicker in places (up to 1mm thick). There are the remains of a grey ?solder on the face of the brooch and the surface is not smooth. The catchplate has a 6x2mm long within it.

Dolphin brooch with spring mechanism and axis bar. The head is sloping to one side and sooting on the back suggests it may have been subject to heat. The wings are semi-circular but the upper parts, covering the top of the spring, are missing/ broken away. The spring is curious as the coils and axis bar on one side of the wings remain while on the other the coils appear to have broken off -only a small stump remains- and the axis bar appears to have been bent at a right angle to point straight backwards. The bow is slightly distorted, ?heat. The back of the bow curves to make the catc…

Incomplete Roman copper alloy plate brooch, missing its hinged pin and the curl of its catchplate. It consists of a square c.14x14mm with rounded corners, concave at its reverse, and with a flat round lug extending from each of its four corners. Each lug has a hollowed area, which probably once held enamel (no traces survive) and the lug which hides the catchplate is rather more oval than round, perhaps to hide the length of the catchplate. The pin would have been held between two semi-circular lugs.
A c.11mm diameter circular layer - like a boss - lies on top of the square, at the c…

Complete Roman copper alloy T-shape brooch of the Dorset type.
An integral loop extends upwards from the head, and the tubular wingspan is c.20mm in length. The bow extends almost at a right angle from the head for a litle way, before dropping : from the reverse of the brooch, the bow falls in a smooth curve, but the panelled decoration on the front gives it a rather more angular feel. The panelled decoration is within a raised rectangular area and filled with two areas of rocker-arm motif either side of a central rib. The leg extends smoothly below this, the curve unbroken, while th…
