Copper alloy Roman brooch fragment. Missing head, spring, pin; damaged catchplate. The upper bow is a narrow oval in section with notching across the front face; in profile it is quite strongly curved. At the break it appears to be thickening slightly at the back. A plain circular flange joins the base of the upper bow and the the lower bow continues from the back of the flange. There is a slight raised triangle on the underneath of the flange (but not a beak as found on Birdlip types). The lower bow is flat backed with a convex face and tapers very slightly. There is horizontal notch…

Original brooch diameter c.55mm. Similar in most resspects to the right hand eg in Hattatt Fig 130 top row. These large penannulars are no…

Copper alloy brooch fragment, fantail type. Only the lower bow survives, and this is missing both bottom corners. The bow is flat backed, and narrow at the top break, with at least two transverse ribs immediately above a disc with small side knobsThe disc has a central setting, now empty, bounded by a small ridge, diam 8mm; the outer ring has a slight groove but is very abraded. The fantail foot is slightly thinner (2mm) than the disc. It is decorated with sharp V-section grooves parallel to the sides and angled in towards the centre base. The bottom edge has a slight rib along it. Th…

Copper alloy brooch, Colchester type. Complete, pin bent. The spring has 12 turns; it is attached via an axis bar which passes through a pierced lug and the chord is held by a short forward facing hook above the pierced lug (but this is definitely not a damged double pierced lug, the rounded hook terminal is in good condition). The wings have single angled grooves and single vertical grooves at the terminals and at the bow junctions. The wings are only slightly curved in profile. The tapering bow is triangular in section with small side flanges and a strong central groove. The catchpl…

Copper alloy brooch, crossbow type. Complete except for the pin of which only the top survives; overcleaned. The crossarm is roughly rectangular in section with notching on the projecting front and has areas of gilding. A rivet is visible on the back of the crossarm just to the right of the pin slot, function is unclear. The knobs are onion shaped with a single rib moulding at the base. The bow has a flat centre band with a double row of punched angled trapezoids - perhaps originally niello filled - and some gilding survives on the sides. The long foot has a flat face with small facet…

Copper alloy flat enamelled zoomorphic brooch, probably a lion. Missing pin, damaged catchplate and legs, areas of corrosion. The pin was sprung (3-turns) on a bar between two lugs 5mm apart. The animal has a rounded head with open mouth and excised areas, one of which probably leads into an eye shape, but it is not clear whether there was any enamel on the head. The main body area is separated from the head by a straight line (slightly suggestive of a collar?)from which lines project (obscured by corrosion) into the first of two enamelled cells, in which no enamel survives. A fragment of a Roman copper-alloy chatelaine brooch. Part of one side of the brooch survives, including one lug to take the missing chatelaine bar. Part of the edge with one side lug is bent back at right angles, apparently torn away from the incomplete plate. The plate is decorated with two bands; the lower contains two triangles and the upper two semi-circles. These decorative cells contain traces of a deposit which may be yellow enamel. The brooch fragment measures 17.09mm in length, 21.6mm in width and weighs 2.3g. Hattatt illustrates examples of these brooches and suggests a se…
