Copper alloy flat enamelled brooch in the form of a fantastic beast. It is missing the pin, lower legs and perhaps the front of the head and there is some damage to the enamel. The pin was hinged between two close-set lugs behind the tail area. The head of the beast has a long ibex / antelope-like horn with transverse angled cuts; the eye is a lightly punched double ring and there is possible damage in the nose - mouth area, though a v-notch here might represent the mouth. The body is elongated with a central bulge, above which is a double pointed projection (?spine, ?fin) to the fron…

Copper alloy brooch, ?variant Colchester derivative. Missing spring, pin, one wing, foot with catchplate; bow very bent. The spring attachment apparently consists of a single central pierced lug (which has a fragment of wire in the hole)for the axis bar, with no trace of a second lug or rear hook to hold the chord. The surviving wing is undecorated. The flat backed bow joins the top edge of the wings and has a low convex face; three longitudinal grooves define four ribs, (quite similar to Langton Down types), which taper and flatten towards the foot. Surviving length 30mm, surviving w…

Copper alloy brooch, Trumpet derived Alcester type. Missing pin, headloop, most of catchplate, foot terminal detail; very corroded. The spring is held between lugs at each edge of the trumpet head. The mid bow flange is a solid hemisphereand joins the bottom edge of the trumpet head at the back. The corroded traces of silver inlay decoration include single "eye" dots and a centre band on the head, probable dots on the flange and two ring and dots shapes on the flat lower bow. Width 10mm, surviving length 32mm. Type as Hattatt no. 1539; a very similar example is published from Hachesto…

Copper alloy ring fragment, turned up at one end and so probably an incomplete penannular brooch. External diameter 34mm. The ring is a flat oval in section, 2.7 x 1.8mm, flattened and bent back at the damaged terminal. There are traces of a line of punched dots at 1mm intervals on the upper face near the terminal, and perhaps at the other end, but the middle area is very worn. Probably a Fowler type C, and so could date between Late Iron Age and late Roman or even early Anglo-Saxon.

Copper alloy brooch, penannular type with flattened coiled terminal(s). Missing pin and one terminal, bent and corroded. The ring is circular in section, diameter 3mm. The flattened end is coiled back into an untidy two-ring spiral. Original diameter would have been greater than 30mm. Similar to Colchester (1983) no.99, and probably early Roman (though the Fowler C type re-appears in the 4th century).

Copper alloy brooch, Headstud type. Complete except for headloop and enamel but corroded and abraded. The pin is hinged and there is no trace of a headloop - which was therefore probably formed from extensions of the hinge bar wire. The pin has a small double rib moulding at the top of the shaft. The headstud is a cast dot in circle motif, with no trace of enemal surviving in the intervening circle. The enamelled bow has blue surviving in the central lozenges and traces of possible red in the flanking triangles. The foot is flat-ended with a small 2mm diam off-centre pit which may be a…

Copper alloy flat enamelled disc brooch. Missing pin, damaged headloop and catchplate. Pin hinged on two close set lugs. A central 3.5mm diam recess could have held enamel or some other setting; two narrow concentric grooves are also empty but an outer 3mm wide band contains enamel, alternately plain ?white (now cream coloured) and pairs of black lines on ?white. The brooch shape is not unusual (Hattatt nos 1038-1039 have the single headloop projection) but the use of millefiori type dark lines is not so easy to parallel.

Copper alloy brooch fragment, Trumpet headed type. Missing pin, most of the lower bow and catchplate, headloop; very corroded margins. The pin is sprung beween two lugs. The head has traces of decoration - a central line and a line across the middle following the curve of the top edge; these are now very corroded, perhaps originally silvered. A transverse double moulding at the base of the head consists of a narrow rib with a broader but largely missing flange below. At the back the lower edge of the Trumpet head joins the back of the flange, leaving a small (c.3mm) hole in profile. T…

Copper alloy wire object with one coiled terminal, probably a small penannular brooch. The secon terminal and pin are missing, and the ring is bent. The ring is circular is section, 1.2mm in diameter, and flattenedto form the terminal loop (which is 2mm across). The surviving shape suggests an original diameter for the brooch of less than 20mm. This type of brooch is found in the Iron Age and both ear;ly and late Roman contexts; a similar small example from Camulodunum (Hawkes and Hull 1947 p.327 Fig 59 no.2) provides an early Roman parallel.

Copper alloy penannular brooch fragment. Half only, missing pin and bent next to the break. The ring is of rectangular section (2.2 by 1.2mm) with the terminal coiled back. The front face has notches on the outer edge and an incised zigzag. Original diameter about 21mm. Similar to an example from Oakley, Suffolk (OKY 005 85206) in size and with notched edges (both edges), and another larger one from Kelvedon (Rodwell 1987, 60 no.32) from a 4th century grave; and for one with heavier incised zigzags see Colchester (Crummy 1983, 18 no. 102). Copper alloy enamelled animal brooch, hare/hound series. Complete except for the enamel in the centre cell. The pin is sprung between two lugs 5mm apart. The surviving enamel in the front and back cells is blue; the colour of the dot for the eye is unclear. There are traces of ?solder (probably a white metal strip attached to the surface) around the edges of the enamel cells on the body and around the eye. Length 37mm, height (paw to ear tip) 21mm, plate is 2mm thick. The animal is probably a dog - based on tail, snout and paw shapes; however the crouched legs are more like the hares …

Copper alloy brooch, Hod Hill type. Missing the top of bow and foot, heavy corrosion makes it difficult to be sure of original form, especially as it is also bent flat. Most likely it is nearly complete but missing side projections - however it could be the bottom half of a much larger piece. At the top there are two strong transverse ribs, below which a small rectangular plate has a centre rib (giving a low triangular section) and is probably damaged along the edges. The lower bow is very corroded, with two transverse ribs at the top. Surviving length 40mm. Probably as Riha no. 892

Unusual copper-alloy brooch, flat and roughly in the shape of a capital I. It is basically rectangular, with a series of eight flat knops around the edge. The knops at the corners are formed by extending the corners, and there are small knops in the centres of the short sides and larger ones in the centres of the long sides. In the centre is a raised rectangle, with a grooved border around. Then there is a double-grooved border which is extended out into the corner knops. The side knops each have a longitudinal double groove. All of the grooves appear to be made up of short punchm…

Enamelled copper alloy umbonate disc brooch. Missing pin, damaged hinge lugs, very abraded around the margin; cracked at one edge and probably squashed in the centre. The pin was hinged between two close-set lugs, just below the stubs of a probable headloop; the catchplate is behind a projecting knob. The main area is slightly domed (probably originally more so) and concave behind. A central dot has no surviving enamel; a surrounding 8-pointed star has spots of blue enamel in four of the triangles making up the points (alternating with plain metal); the background eight triangles cont…

Copper alloy enamelled brooch, Hattatt's 'Umbonate with rounded cells' type. Missing pin and some enamel. Conical central area with central knob, four petal-shaped cells containing discoloured pale green enamel (probably originally turquoise as outer ring) and red background cells. Copper alloy fragment from an enamelled dragonesque type brooch. Part of the centre panel and narrow curve beyond only, abraded. The shape is a reverse-S. The surviving piece could be from either top or base of the centre panel - there is possible pin wear suggesting the top, but no sign of a stay on the body (to join to the head) suggesting the base. The enamelled cells comprise two curving triangles with two rectangles (incomplete) behind - originally this would have been a four-rectangle type. Surviving enamel fragments are a pale blue alternating with dark red (?), but the cells co…

Copper alloy enamelled brooch fragment. Foot only with a damaged loop. A rectangular section flat plate, with three logitudinal cells, the centre one containing traces of deep red enamel, the outline broadening towards the terminal. At the terminal there are two small side projections and a small central chain loop, with the catchplate immediately behind and above. The break is above a line closing the enamelled cells and it appears to narrow here. The placing of the catchplate suggests that the missing part was probably not very long.
