A tiny silver gilt annular brooch, complete, from the late 12th-late 13th century.
J.P. Robinson and B.J. Cook of the British Museum report:
'The coin is a petit denier, a type of small coin of silver made throughout Flanders and neighbouring principalities from the mid 12th to the late 13th centuries. The fineness of these coins was variable across time, but a level of about 40-50% good silver is probable for this particular example. There are very many varieties of these coins produced in the Flemish cities across this time period - literally hundreds are known. A number of thes…

An incomplete, cast silver annular brooch, c. 1200-1400. Approximately ½ of the brooch remains, though this has been bent. The hoop is rectangular in section and (when complete) was circular in plan. What remains of the hoop bears evidence of 'tearing' of the metal at one end, presumably from bending, while the opposite end of the remains indicates a much cleaner break across the narrowed thickness of the pin restriction. Both faces of the brooch are decorated. Once face bears stylized panels of slightly raised dogs on a sunken field with raised outer edges forming the border. On the…

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch fragment from the Medieval period, c. 1230-1400.
