An incomplete copper-alloy equal-ended plate brooch of Roman 2nd century AD date. This brooch is circular in plan with a diameter of 20.94mm and has a central circular aperture of 9.00mm. The edges of the brooch have raised borders creating a design of concentric circles. The recessed field between the raised borders contains the remains of a light blueish-green glassy substance, probably enamel. Four decorative knops are spaced equidistantly around the outer edge of the brooch. These knops increase the diameter of the brooch to a width and height of 36.28mm, meaning that each o…

The wings have a sub-oval to 'D' shaped cross-section measuring 6.0mm x 4.5mm. The flatter reverse surface of the wings are smooth and undecorated. The more convexly rounded front surface has shallow grooves, transversely across the wings so as to line up in the same direction as the bow. The length of the wings give the brooch a combined maximum width of 19.1mm. The tip of both wings have worn breaks. It is u…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman oval plate brooch, c.2nd-3rd century AD. The brooch has a length of 30.57mm, width of 23.44mm and weighs 8.93g. The upper surface has a slightly raised rim which is 0.90mm wide. Inside this rim is a field 3.97mm wide that was originally gilt, only tiny patches of which now survive. At the centre of the brooch is a raised concentric oval bezel although the centre is now empty as the setting is missing. It is likely that the setting was a cone of black glass as a couple of small patches of a black glassy substance are present within the bezel. The majori…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative brooch weighing 7.34g. The fragment consists of semi-circular curved worn wings that extend to a width of 30.0mm and have a length of 8.2mm. The bow starts to project out from the top half of the centre of the upper surface of the wings. The surviving section of bow has a maximum width of 9.1mm and a 'D' shaped cross-section the upper surface being convex. A very slight groove may run laterally along each edge of the upper surface of the bow set 0.9mm in from the edge. The presence or absence of a slight groove is due to the pit…

An incomplete copper-alloy trumpet brooch of Group B, of Roman date, c.AD 80-200. This brooch has a total weight of 5.06g. The trumpet head area is oval in shape with a width of 10.38mm and height of 10.66mm. At the centre of the top edge of the trumpet head a small protrusion is present. It is uncertain whether this protrusion is a decorative knop or the remains of a broken off head loop. If the protrusion was the neck of a head loop the break is very worn. A slight transverse collar is present on the upper surface of this protrusion. The protrusion has a length of 1.37mm, maximu…
