An incomplete cast and enamelled disc brooch of Roman date, probably second century (AD 100 - AD 200). Length 20.6mm, width 18.3mm and 1.4mm thick. Weight 3.15g. The brooch is flat at the front and circular in plan and the thickness of the plate is 1.4mm. It may originally have had small peripheral lugs. The rim is broken and corroded and none of the lugs have survived, but the stub of one appears to be extant. The enamels are divided by copper alloy ribs in a six-pointed star formation, with a bronze centre dot (pellet) which is 2.6mm in diameter. Each point of the star extends to …

At the head of the bow are two stubs forming the remains of a chain loop. The wings are diminutive and viewing the brooch from the front, the left hand wing is almost non-existent due to an old break. The right hand wing is decorated with three stepped vertical flutes. The rear part of the head is damaged and corroded. However, a small portion of a copper alloy axis bar survives and it appears to have secur…

An incomplete cast and tinned copper alloy Hod Hill brooch of Roman, first century date (c. AD 43 – c. AD 75). Length 55.6mm, maximum width 17.0mm and 4.1mm thick. Weight 4.24g. The pin, part of the bow, part of the catch-plate, one side arm and part of the foot are missing due to old breaks. About half the brooch is missing due to old breaks. The catch-plate and pin are also missing. The plate would have originally been circular in plan and it is estimated that the diameter would have been about 20.0mm. It is convex at the front and largely concave at the rear. At the front it has a raised peripheral rim and a central circular and floorless collet (or cup). The rim has been punched or perhaps knur…

A fragment of a Roman brooch. Probably a Colchester type of the first century (AD 43 – AD 100). Length 37.2mm, width 3.8mm. Weight 2.63g. The fragment consists of the lower part of the bow and the catch-plate. A transverse break has occurred on the bow, about 8.0mm above the upper part of the catch-plate. This break is old and abraded. At the break the bow is D-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. The width of the tapering bow at the break is 3.8mm and at the foot the width is 1.8mm. An incomplete cast copper alloy “trumpet-headed” brooch of Roman date, first or second century (AD 43 - AD 200). The chain loop (possibly) and the pin are missing due to old breaks. A small portion of the catch-plate is also missing. Length 59.5mm, maximum width of trumpet head 19.2mm. Weight 17.66g. The expanded head of this type of brooch has been likened to the bell of a trumpet. At the crest of the head there may have originally been an integral chain loop. However, due to corrosion, it is not certain whether a loop existed. In this example the head is hollow at the rear and…

The wings, the spring and the pin are incomplete and the lower part of the bow is missing. All the breaks are old and abraded. The wings appear to have fully enclosed the spring mechanism. However, part of the wings at the rear is missing due to ragged breaks. Each end of the wing is also missing. An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Roman Colchester derivative brooch (AD 50 – AD 80). Overall length 22.8mm, width 33.0 and maximum thickness 3.9mm. Weight 5.99g. The lower part of the bow and catch-plate are missing due to an old break. The spring mechanism (including the chord) and pin are also missing. The wings which are 33.0mm in width are semi-cylindrical (concave at the rear). The wings are abnormally long for a Colchester brooch and might suggest a link to some of the South-western brooches which have long wings. At the end of each wing, at the front, there is a sim…
