Late Roman copper alloy crossbow brooch, 63mm long and 42mm wide. The brooch is in fair condition with a brown patina and weighs 31.09 grams. The brooch begins with terminal knob which has a form made up of two pyramids joined together at the base. This has a protruding knop of similar form. This sits above a rectangular sectioned wing which has a stepped front edge, causing it to narrow towards the terminal knobs. These knobs are hexagonally sectioned with a sub triangular form similar to the central terminal. These knobs, which are integral, form the most complex part of the brooch.…

A Romano-British copper alloy brooch. The brooch is probably a headstud type brooch, dating from c. AD 75- 200. The brooch is a hinged, the pin and axle bar are now missing. The front of the brooch has undecorated wings, and the bow projects outwards at c. 90 degrees from the wings. The bow is then quite straight in profile. At the top or shoulder of the bow is a moulded decoration of an integrally cast circular stud with a small rectangular protrusion directly above. The foot sweeps outwards towards the front and is flat at the bottom. The catchplate remains intact at the back of the…

An incomplete copper alloy initial T-shaped brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 55-90.
The wings and upper part of the bow survive, with the remainder of the bow, foot, foot plate and pin all now missing. The arms are cylindrical in shape, albeit with a flattened upper surface giving them a U-shaped cross section. In the centre is a square depression which originally held the hinge, although this is much affected by sedimentation. The bow is rectangular in profile and D-shaped in cross section, with the D particularly exaggerated by the raised central decorative panel. It rai…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman developed T-shaped brooch of Hull T105/6, dating to c. AD 50-150.
The brooch comprises the wings and part of the bow, the lower part of the bow, footplate and pin are all now missing. The wings are cylindrical in shape with a broad rectangular notch at the centre where a significant amount of iron decay suggests that the iron hinge would have been located. The bow rises gently from the centre of the wings, and is flattened in cross section. It curves very steadily downwards to the break.
The wings are decorated with a number of incised verti…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy large, south-western developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to cAD 75 - 200.
The wings, upper bow and part of the headplate survive. The wings are cylindrical, and appear to have been potentially hollow although the apertures at the terminals are partly filled with debris- the opening is visible in the central rectangular notch which would have once housed the hinge, attached to a pin which presumably filled the hollow wings. Above the wings rears the head plate, which is comprised of a rectangular plate and the stub of the once circular head …

Only the wings and a small fragment of the bow survive.
The wings are cylindrical in shape, sub-circular in cross section, perpendicular to the bow and are decorated with two parallel circular grooves at each end. The wings contain the axis bar for the hinged pin, a small fragment of which is still visible on the reverse side. There is a central slot on the reverse of the wings, to allow the hinges to move. The humped head of the bow is convex and decorat…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman initial T-shaped brooch dating to AD 75-150.
The brooch is fragile and slender, with the wings damaged and only the bow surviving. The bow is unusually slender and tapers to an extremely delicate terminal, which is now folded 180 degrees beneath the broader bow. The truncated and damaged wings are also very slimline in apperance, although the bow where it rears from the wings is thick and robust. The reverse is slightly hollowed in a triangular section under the thickest part of the bow. There is no sign of enamel decoration, but some suggestion …

A fragmentary copper-alloy Roman initial T-shaped brooch dating to AD 50-150, now just comprising the upper bow and head, the latter now broken.
One of the wings is seemingly intact, while the other is broken at its junction with the bow. On the reverse, the broken wing is also abraded revealing the channel for the axis bar; the pin, of course, is missing. The extant wing is broadly circular, though squared off at the top. Retained within it are the remains of a probably iron bar, as suggested by traces of iron corrosion product in a longitudinal groove …

Copper alloy Iron Age brooch. It is in very good condition and comprises a three-spoked wheel placed just off centre of the bow. Two rounded mouldings link this to the foot and a setting that would have held a coloured stone, coral or red glass. The foot then loops under to form the catchplate, which appears almost complete. The hinge consists of a damaged coil that still has part of the pin in place. Two rounded mouldings then link this to the wheel.
