Cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5.a3, flat wing ends). Rearward facing lugs on either end of the wings hold the spring support bar, the spring is still in place and is made of seven curls. A loop on the top of the head holds the external cord of the spring. The bow narrows to a point at the foot. Catch plate on the reverse is missing. Length 23mm, width 14mm, thickness 13mm. Date 130-360 AD.

Rearward facing lugs on either end of the wings hold the spring support bar, the spring has nine curls. The fronts of the wings have two moulded ridges. The top of the bow has crest that runs down the first third, this has a loop on the top for the external cord of the spring. The lower part of the leg is truncated resulting in the loss of the catch plate. Length 25mm, width 18mm, thickness 14mm, weight 5.44g. Date 80-120AD.

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped brooch dating from AD 70-150. Tubular wings which hold the pin axis bar, there is a slot in the centre of the wings at the rear for the pin, the pin is missing. The bow has a crest running down from the head, it is truncated at the apex of the bow resulting in the loss of the catchplate.

Copper alloy Colchester derivatve ibrooch of Mackreth (2011), CD Ha, 3.a1. The West of England Group. It is 56mm long, width 21mm, thickness 15mm, weight 9.02g. This has a loop that the top of the head which would have held the external cord of the spring, securing the spring and to the bow. The wings are semi-circular in cross-section with a concave rear and would have shielded the spring, the front are decorated a double groove with a beaded centre. An incomplete copper alloy Roman Dolphin type or Colchester derivative type, brooch dating to the period c. AD 43 - 100. The pin and part of the hinge mechanism are missing. The remainder of the brooch is complete except for some slight damage to the head. The brooch measures 53.97mm in length, 28.72mm maximum width (across the wings), and weighs 10.13g. An incomplete Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative, double pierced lug, Harlow type brooch dating to 43-70 AD. This has a double pieced lug on the rear of the head for the spring and external cord (both are now missing). The wings have a convex face with two recessed lines on the face. The front of the bow is also is decorated with a central recessed band that run down its length to the pointed foot, in the centre of the band ins a raised zigzag pattern. The catch plate on the reverse is complete.

Copper alloy oval plate brooch that has a large raised central cell that contains a black glass conical gemstone. The top of stone is chipped with two conchoidal fractures that emanate from the tip of the stone. On the top of the surrounding plate is a low raised band that runs around the middle and a second raised band that runs around the edge which has the effect of creating two concentric recessed panels both of which retains its original gold gilding.

The lower bow, foot and catchplate only of a Roman trumpet brooch of the 1st or 2nd century AD. The broken bow has a moulding at the centre that would have been at the apex of the bow. The moulding does not extend to rear surface. It retains traces of a white metal coating.

A loop surmounts the top of the brooch, below the brooch is undecorated except for two moulded lozenge cells with raised borders at the bows apex, these cells would have held enamel. This has rearward facing lugs on either end of the wings that hold the axis bar, the spring is made from eleven curls, but the pin is missing. Surmounting the head is a tall decorative knop with a column base and spherical top, the remainder of the head is undecorated. The bow is made from a flat rectangular arch which has three groves adorning the face. The lower part of the bow is truncated resulting in the loss of the catchplate.

An Iron Age La Tene I type brooch dating to the period c. 400 - 200 BC.
The head consists of an integrally cast spring with a chord and four loops wrapped around a copper alloy axis bar. The fourth loop becomes the pin and passes under the chord before tapering to a point. The body arches upwards from the head at almost 90 degrees and widens along its length. It has a convex obvese and a slightly concave reverse. The bow then tapers and arches downwards into the leg at another almost 90 degree angle and then widens to form the catchplate which projects from one side of the leg. The…
