An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 5.a1. The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated caps at the terminals holding the axis bar. This bar holds the spring and the incomplete pin. The bar is broken, and the spring and pin are disarticulated, but the elements appear to be held together with soil. The copper alloy wire of the spring would also have formed the external chord, running through the pierced lug between the wings (See Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Br…

A cast copper-alloy Roman brooch fragment, of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4. d, flat wing ends type). Only the head and a very small part of the bow remains. The brooch is fragmentary and very worn, but based on the shape of the head and the possibility of slight plates above what remains of the wings the brooch may be of Polden Hill type. It has open sub-cylindrical wings which would have held the pin mechanism, now missing. The remains of a possible attachment lug are visible at the top of the head. Faint moulded ribbed decoration can be seen ru…
