Two separate pieces of an unidentified, lead alloy artefact, of uncertain date, probably AD 500 - 1800. It is possible that they are part of the head of an Early Medieval great square headed brooch, or a model for one, dating from AD 500 - 570. The two pieces do not join, and it is uncertain what shape it was originally. It seems most likely to have been a rectangular or square plaque. The reverse is plain and flat. The upper face is decorated in a geometric design, probably executed in cast relief. The break is patinated but not particularly worn.
The larger piece is roughly squ…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman rear hook Colchester derivative brooch. The head is incomplete, only part of one wing surviving. This surviving section is decorated with a wide transverse flute. The reverse of the head is concave and the remains of a rear-facing hook projects from the centre of its upper edge. The bow is a flattened D-shape in cross-section, curved in profile and tapering towards a rounded break at its lower end. The outer face of the bow is decorated with two widely spaced, parallel, longitudinal ribs running down the centre. The lower bow, foot and catch-plate are …

Copper alloy annular brooch. Cast narrow band annular brooch with a band which is beaded on its display side and flat on the back, retaining a cast collared pin which is looped around the frame. Rust staining of the surface is prominent on the display side though the object was tested with a magnet to confirm its non-ferrous nature. The narrow band annular brooch is a feature of later, generally late 6th to 7th-century, Early Anglo-Saxon furnished burials of adult women, though objects of much the same form enjoyed a renewed popularity in the high medieval period. Suggested date: Unkn…

Copper alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast terminal with a collared ball end set above or at one end of a slotted bar of width 8.2mm, the slot being 3mm wide. This resembles a side or top knob from a later Roman crossbow brooch or an early medieval cruciform brooch; in either case the slot on this object would be unexplained. The slotted bar continued for an uncertain further length; fiercely abraded. Helen Geake kindly suggests an alternative identification as an early Anglo-Saxon scabbard chape, commenting as follows: 'Is it one of these scabbard chapes of early AS date? common sha…

An incomplete copper alloy lead brooch of uncertain date, similar in form to the Roman umbonate plate brooch.
A convex boss protrudes from a flat plate. The plate edges have been broken Old break) but has the remains of knops. The boss is divided into facets by five concentric ridges sub divided by ridges rising from the base to the apex. At the apex is a slight knop. At the base of the boss there appears to have a shallow groove. The facets do not contain the remains of any enamel. The reverse is concave. There is an&n…

An incomplete gold disc, possibly a disc brooch or mount. This fragment weighs 3.33g but includes the weight of some adhering mud. No full diameter survives, however the radius measures 17.4mm which would suggest a diameter of 34.8mm if this was indeed a circular artefact. The edge is serrated, each projection having a width of c.1.6mm, some segments seem to be missing and others reduced in length or bent over suggesting partial damage to the edge. At the base of these a strand of wire forms a border on the upper surface. The wire has a width of 0.8mm. It is uncertain due to the adher…

A small, copper alloy, annular brooch of either Early Medieval date, about AD 400 - 600, or the Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1400. It is in the form of a flat annular circles of sheet metal with a small, circular perforation to accept the pin loop. A copper alloy pin of shallow D shaped cross-section also remains in place. The outer face carries faint traces of tinning or another white metal coating and also traces of a design consisting of radial lines. The inner face is unmarked. The brooch is 17.3mm in diameter and 0.5mm thick. It weighs 0.9g. The frame is 4m…

Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast discoid plate retaining paired lugs for a probably iron spring and an opposed catch plate. Extensive rust on the back may arise from decay of the pin and may incorporate mineral preserved textile traces. The front bears the bordered relict of a curvilinear design in which a reflective spot of enamel appears. This could perhaps suggest a brooch of Weetch type 18, c. AD800-900, though earlier plate brooches include the use of enamel in more symmetrical arrangements. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 100-1000

Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a bow brooch with a concavo-convex mid-bow, with moulded borders or stops above and below, constricted lower bow with expanded square plate at its end. Most of a folded catch plate projects from behind the lower bow. Probably from a small cruciform or small long brooch, though its poor condition and some accompanying material might permit this to come from a late Roman brooch of uncertain form - the knee brooch series is perhaps the most likely candidate. Suggested date: Unknown, late Roman to Early Medieval, 200-600
