A very unusual copper-alloy Roman bow brooch for which no parallel could be found. It appears most likely to be a variation on the hod hill and aucissa types. The brooch is complete apart from missing its pin. It measures 47.59mm in length and 26.54mm at its widest point. The corroded iron remains of the axis bar, on which the pin was hinged, are held in a rolled over bow terminal, 20.25mm in width. Below the rolled bow terminal the brooch slopes down at a circa 45 degree angle and has three evenly spaced circular holes through it. There is then a wider part with triangular side pro…

The probably mouth of the trumpet is deeply pitted and distorted. Traces of a red material survive, particularly near the foot and on the side of the bow. It is not clear whether thi…

Incomplete Roman copper alloy plate-headed T-shaped brooch, missing most of its loop, lower bow and catchplate, and pin. The iron axis bar appears to have corroded in situ. The tubular wingspan is 34.5mm and they are a little bent out of shape. Each is decorated circa half way along with a vertical groove. The plate head extends a little way above the wings and at the centre into a rectangular plate projecting upwards (decorated with two horizontal groves), from which the loop would have extended. This has now broken off (ancient break). The bow is flat and 15.4mm wide where i…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch. The brooch is lozenge shaped (lozengiform) with two flat sub-circular lugs protruding from the top and bottom of the central lozenge. It is quite likely that a further two such lugs protruded from the sides of the lozenge but the brooch is too worn for there to be great certainty about this. The lozenge is stepped at the edges and the interior of this is hollowed with a small raised central circular cell which is also hollow. Based on similar examples it is likely that these hollows were filled with enamel inlay. The reverse of…

Incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch. The brooch is a Colchester derivative with a double-pierced lug projecting from the centre of the interior of the wings to secure the spring (one lug secures the axis bar, the other holds the spring's chord in position). Such brooches represent a technological development from the one-piece 'true' Colchester design, and date to the second half of the first century. The wings of the brooch are semi-circular in shape with some minor decoration in the form of an incised groove at the ends (only one end being present in this case) and th…

Copper alloy dragonesque brooch made from a piece of thin sheet metal. There are hammer marks on the reverse. The form is a classic dragonesque shape with one terminal broken off at the neck. The necks are very delicate. The only decorations are one ring and dot in the centre of the body and one ring and dot on the head and terminal. There is a possibility that this is not a brooch, based on the delicate nature of the necks and the thinness of the body.

Fragment of a copper alloy Roman dragonesque brooch. It is the central part of the brooch which remains. The decoration is in relief and does not appear to have had any enamel on it. It is probably a derivative of the early West Brigantian types with the central motif being made up of 2 trumpets meeting in a circle. This design is seen in early Celtic art. A similar example (although in an openwork design) can be seen in Hattatt (1982; 154-5).
