A Romano-British dolphin brooch, possibly of the Polden Hill type. The brooch is relatively short (26.4mm), with 22.1mm wide wings housing a spring casing open at the rear. The brooch has a downwardly curving, typical dolphin style bow, which tapers gently to a blunt, rounded foot. The bow is decorated with reeding and zigzags, and there is a small stud at its apex. The brooch could be classified as a Langton Down type, but the slight flaring at the wing terminals might relate to the 'appendages' typical of the Polden Hill spring mechanism. Similarly, a single-pierced lug is pre…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Romano British strip brooch. The flat square shaped head plate is decorated with a number of transverse grooves and has two lateral notches. The tip of the head has an asymmetrically set notch, the sides of which are folded back to secure the pin hinge, one side of which is missing. The mechanism was a hinge type, but both the axis bar and the pin are missing. Traces of iron corrosion around the hinge suggest that parts of the mechanism were iron. The slightly curved flat bow has a rib running down the length and is truncated. Both the foot and catchpla…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Iron Age to early Roman brooch, probably of strip bow type, c. 1st century AD. The wings, neck and part of the bow are complete. It would appear the bow has broken off halfway down, and the footend, catchplate, hinge and pin are all missing. The pin would have been hinged in the narrow tube formed at the top of the bow, which was rolled backwards; the bow is a broad reeded sub-rectangular strip, which probably flared slightly near the foot although that portion is now missing.
