Copper alloy penannular brooch fragment. Half of the ring, missing pin, fairly corroded. Circular section ring, diam. 3 mm, with closely set transverse grooves on the outer face, undecorated (grooves worn away?) at the back. The terminal is slightly expanded, flattened and almost rectangular with a lozengiform moulding on the outer face and another V-shaped moulding joining the terminal to the rest of the frame. This is a highly devolved zoomorphic form, as Fowler type E and Hattatt no 656. Current (limited) chronological data suggests this type was a late Roman contemporary of the c…

On the upper half there is an empty circular setting which is held above the main bow on four legs which have curved cross mouldings and a groove along the edges and are attached at top of bow, mid bow and the edge…

Copper-alloy conical disc brooch, missing pin and part of the outer ring of the main body. The pin was hinged on two close set lugs, both now blocked with corrosion, probably copper alloy from the pin bar. Opposite the lugs is an incomplete catchplate. The cone has three concentric ribs at the base; the outer one has fine incised lines across it. Head and upper part of the bow of a Roman cast copper-alloy initial T-shaped brooch with hinged pin dating to c. AD 60-100. The lower part of the bow, foot and most of the pin of the brooch are missing to worn breaks. The brooch head has open-ended cylindrical wings, 30.4mm wide, containing an axis bar for the hinge. Both are complete and nearly closed at the end but one is split exposing some iron corrosion suggesting the hinge is iron. The wings are each decorated with several transverse incised lines, evenly spaced between the head and the end. There is a large transverse slot thro…

Large dragonesque brooch, complete apart from the end of the pin. Both head and foot are identical, each in the shape of a 'dragon' head. The eye is made from a bold ring-and-dot, and the curled-up snout ends in a circular lobe decorated with five punched dots (unclear on the foot due to corrosion). The ears are formed from an oval lobe divided into two by a tall ridge; either side of the ridge are champlev√© cells for enamel. These have a keyed surface but all the enamel is now missing. The neck and foot curve in towards a widened body which is decorated with more champlev√© cells, a…
