An incomplete gold dog brooch of uncertain date, possibly early Post-Medieval. This three dimensional brooch seems to have been hollow or at least the body was hollow. The dog is positioned left with the head turned forwards. One ear is missing however the ear nearest the tail survives in good condition. All four legs are missing and there is a break across the chest area that is now filled with mud. The curled tail survives. The nose, mouth and eyes are very detailed and the dog wears a loose fitting collar that swivels around it's neck. On the reverse a hinged pin, now bent, and cat…

An incomplete gold disc, possibly a disc brooch or mount. This fragment weighs 3.33g but includes the weight of some adhering mud. No full diameter survives, however the radius measures 17.4mm which would suggest a diameter of 34.8mm if this was indeed a circular artefact. The edge is serrated, each projection having a width of c.1.6mm, some segments seem to be missing and others reduced in length or bent over suggesting partial damage to the edge. At the base of these a strand of wire forms a border on the upper surface. The wire has a width of 0.8mm. It is uncertain due to the adher…

Description: Incomplete gold crossbow brooch with a sheath foot, crossbar and pin missing. The top of the trapezoidal-sectioned, highly arched bow broadens to a bifurcation, beyond which both arms are distorted and broken; they appear originally to have curved around the missing crossbar. On both sides of the split there is chip-carved decoration, with three V-sectioned notches on both edges, and between them an engraved saltire and single horizontal line. The base of the bow is decorated with several transverse engraved lines on the front face. There are three faintly engraved longit…

Roman gold and silver oval brooch, 21mm long, 19mm wide and weighing 6.37grams. The brooch consists of an oval plate which is coated in silver on the reverse. The upper surface is decorated with three concentric ovals of gold ropework. The outer one is wider and higher than the inner two. These have incised lines running at oblique angles in differing directions, which gives the effect of a herringbone pattern. In the centre is a raised border 1mm thick and 2mm high, this may have contained a precious stone, but is now filled with green corrosion or concrection of some sort. Teh back o…

Post medieval brooch; cast gold brooch of possible 16th century date. The brooch is a miniature ring of twisted gold wire sandwiched between two further rings of plain gold wire. There is further twisted wire forming a cross through the centre of the brooch, adorned with a gold pellet at the end of each arm and with a tiny ring of twisted wire in the centre. The back of the brooch has a fitting formed of a flat strip of gold which extends across the centre of the ring and is then curled up on itself at both ends to form loops. The finder confirms that there was originally a gold pin at…

Gold; finder’s analysis suggests 22 carat. Brooch. Frame of a brooch of oval or rhomboid form. A thin cast moulded front of curvilinear floral design inhalf relief is attached to a flat back-plate, so the body of the brooch is actually hollow. Front and back are crimped together to provide a setting for an oval stone (now lost). The field of the display face has a slightly rough or stippled surface, so as to emphasise the decorative detail which it surrounds. A long strand of gold wires was wound about the central setting, and at least seven wires each terminating in a small pelle…

Gold brooch. An elongated lentoid plate with reinforcing strips formed by the sharp double folding of its edges behind it, and with a pin seat formed by a vertically set cylinder textured to resemble a spring [pin lost]; at the other end a larger but similarly textured cylinder with an open side is set horizontally to serve as catch plate. The display face of the brooch bears remarkably fine floral decoration of twisted wires of two or three distinct gauges, and clustered pellets of at least two sizes, the largest along the outer edges being of 1.7mm diameter. The brooch is broadly circular at the back plate with a triangular setting at the front face. The brooch has been divided in to six segments on the back plate which is formed from gold. Each segment contains a rivet at its centre which is circular. The rivets are to hold the alternating elements which comprise the design at the front face of the brooch. These are alternating flowers with a central stone setting and a bow shape made of gold. In total there are three flower settings and three bows. The centre of the reverse also has a visible rivet which holds the central gem setting in…

A miniature medieval brooch, roughly oval in shape, and terminating in two joined hands. The brooch has two facets which carry an enigmatic inscription, punctuated by flowers and colons. Reading clockwise from the pin, the letters are On the inner band N V I V N: I I M I N I On the outer band: V I I I T I: I: I - I I V L V I (?)I The meaning of this is unclear, but may have magical or amuletic significance. The two hands may once have held a pearl, which is customary for brooches of this type. The brooch is gold, and dates from the thirteenth century.
