Description: Incomplete gold crossbow brooch with a sheath foot, crossbar and pin missing. The top of the trapezoidal-sectioned, highly arched bow broadens to a bifurcation, beyond which both arms are distorted and broken; they appear originally to have curved around the missing crossbar. On both sides of the split there is chip-carved decoration, with three V-sectioned notches on both edges, and between them an engraved saltire and single horizontal line. Roman gold and silver oval brooch, 21mm long, 19mm wide and weighing 6.37grams. The brooch consists of an oval plate which is coated in silver on the reverse. The upper surface is decorated with three concentric ovals of gold ropework. The outer one is wider and higher than the inner two. These have incised lines running at oblique angles in differing directions, which gives the effect of a herringbone pattern.
