The find consists of a disc of copper alloy overlaid by a thick, embossed sheet of silver decorated with raised triangles radiating round a central boss and interspersed with ladder-pattern strips. There is a pierced circular lobe on the edge above the end of the hinge for the pin. The overlay is folded round the sides of the brooch and the back is tinned. The central boss and one or two of the triangles have been crushed in antiquity. D.: 41 mm Wt.: 19.34g Date. Uncertain, but more than 300 years old. Although the brooch has some similarities with Roman plate brooches, it is muc…

A worn and corroded cast copper-alloy fragment possibly from a brooch of uncertain, possibly Roman date. This artefact is formed from a sub-rectangular in plan head, which has a central circular perforation, with an extension to the left that terminates in the remnants of a circular section pin. From the main body of the possible head extends a rectangular in plan, sub-rectangular in section possible bow. This artefact has a broadly mid-green corrosion patina, with areas of red-brown, around the circular perforation, possibly indicative of a separate iron decorative rivet. The fragme…

A copper alloy brooch of probable Medeival date. The brooch is circular in plan with 7 rounded knops aranged around the circumference. It appears that an eighth knop has been broken away. The circular brooch plate has a rounded rim surrounding an undecorated, slightly convext centre. There are some signs of gilding still remaining. The undecorated reverse has an incompete hinge lug through which the brooch would have been attatched. Given the shape of the brooch it is possible that it could be of an incomplete cloisonnĂ© enamelled brooch, which is missing its settings. A similar e…

A very worn and corroded copper-alloy object, possibly a Colchester type brooch of Roman date. It has a cylindrical body, tapering at one end (top?) to a curving and pointed hook, probably missing its tip due to old breaks. At the opposite end the body tapers, bends outwards to an angle of 90 degrees before eventually narrowing to a pointed tip. There is no sign of any decoration or attachments, and all surfaces are pitted and extremely worn. It measures 64.90mm in length, 3.95mm in maximum diameter/thickness and 3.72g in weight. The precise form and function of this object remain u…

A cast copper-alloy fragment of an object, possibly a Roman umbonate disc brooch dating to the second century AD. The fragment consists of an a hemispherical middle with a circular nipple moulded at the centre; portions of surrounding protruding lugs remain, with four traces of lugs and one more intact lug fragment which is sub-triangular in plan. The reverse of the brooch is deeply concave at the centre, creating the hemispherical shape suggested above. No trace of further decoration or a hinge pin mechnism or pin remain. It measures 17.3mm long, 13mm wide, 7.4mm thick and weighs 1…

A cast copper alloy knop, possibly from a brooch. Due to the fact the knop is the only surviving piece, it is not possible to date it. The knop has a circular, flat terminal, which is joined to a spherical central piece. The outer surface of the sphere is coated in corroded iron, suggesting that it was joined to a larger item at this junction. The metal is slightly pitted and is a mid greyish-green colour.
