A cast copper alloy Roman Colchester one piece brooch, dating to the 1st century AD. The object consists of the bow of the brooch, and the remains of the head. The spring, pin and catchplate are missing; the breaks are well worn. The wings remain as two worn stubs either side of the bow. The head loop and part of the external chord survive. The bow has a flattened oval section and tapers to the foot. It is undecorated. The object is extremely worn and has a mid reddish-brown patina. Parallel for this brooch can be found in Hattatt 2000, page 296, Figure 155.

A cast copper alloy Bow-and-Fantail, bow brooch from the 1st - 2nd century. The head consists of a small tubular crossbar in which the pin is hinged, the pin is missing. The head is undecorated, but the stumps of the head loop survive. The head then tapers inwards to form a thin and circular sectioned bow. Below this the brooch flares to a flat traingular foot. An almost complete and very elaborate cast copper-alloy Roman Headstud brooch, dating from the 2nd century AD. At the apex of the head is a complete head lug. The wings are solid and triangular in section. The hinge mechanism is therefore a tubular type, with an iron axis bar. The pin is attached via the axis bar. It is slightly off-set. A cast copper alloy Bow-and-Fantail, bow brooches date from the 1st - 2nd century. The head and upper bow are missing, due to a break. All that survives is the fantail. The fantail is made from a flared, flat traingular plate. This bears a motif of a three depressed triangles, which were once infilled with enamel. The catchplate lies behind the centre of the flared foot. The metal is a mid greenish-brown colour. Similar brooches can be seen in Hattatt, p315, fig: 174.

The pin is missing. The head is angular and the wings have been decorated with two vertical incised lines, projecting out of the top of the head is a broken loop. An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Dragonesque plate brooch. Only the s-shaped plate of the brooch survives, both of the terminals are missing. The plate is raised in the centre with a rim around the edge and concave on the reverse. The front is decorated with an intricate curved design, in which are four circular hollows with central pellets inside. There are two hollows at each end of the brooch. The metal is a light reddish-brown colour. The surviving length is 42.1mm, the width is 18.9mm, the thickness is 5.8mm and the weight is 21.4g.

The pin mechanism is tubular, but it is incomplete. The front face of the bow, beneath the headstud has a central panel of lozenge shaped moulded decoration with single grooves to either side - this area would once have held enamel. The reverse of the bow is flat and undecorated, but is concave at the head behind the headstud. The lower half of the bow, pin and catchplate are all missing.
