An incomplete Iron Age cast copper alloy La Tene brooch, probably type 1B dating to the period 400 to 275 BC. The head of the brooch originally consisted of four coils to the spring with two loops located on either side of the bow. Only two survive. The bow is curved in section and leaf-shaped in plan. The upper surface of the bow is decorated with two ribs and grooves which form a lentoidal shape. The crests of the surface decoration have a central valley creating twin bands to each. The underside of the bow is plain. The end of the foot, catchplate and toe are missing from an old bre…

A catchplate fragment from a late Iron Age or early Roman conquest period brooch of continental origin. Justine Bayley comments: Catchplates of this type are unusual in Britain, but round perforations are found in a number of early-mid 1st-century types - so this is where I would date this piece. The attached image is from Almgren's book and is related to the Kräftig-profilierte type, the difference being the two (rather than one) buttons on the bow. Hull called it the Wallingford type (his T85) because he knew of an example from there. This catchplate almost certainly comes from…

A composite Colchester-type brooch of very late Iron Age date. The surviving brooch comprises five parts; the missing spring and pin being the sixth. The largest part is the bow and side wings; the latter appear to have been spread out to their present position and on their inside faces there is evidence for the attachment of the spring in the form of small patches of possible solder, or its former position. On the underside of the bow is a hollow groove which extends along the whole length of the bow. Within this has been inserted a separate catchplate, and this still slides…

An incomplete Iron Age La Tene IBc brooch with a narrow, leaf-shaped bow bearing a plain pointed oval motif. A short foot recurves to meet the bow more or less straight on and terminates in a plain snouted disc. Only one and a half coils of the spring mechanism survive, though it is likely that the brooch was originally equipped with a four-coil mock spring with external chord. It falls within a small insular group of leaf-bow brooches designated Group 1Bc by Hull and Hawkes (1987, 107-110) and dated by them to the third and fourth centuries BC.(Two other brooches of similar form and d…
