Part of a brooch, probably a derivative of the Trumpet type (cf Collingwood and Richmond 1969, Type S). The upper bow is an incomplete disc with a lug or fragment of an outer lip at the top; an inner lip defines a central roundel that would originally have been enamelled. Above the disc is an incomplete squareish element that covers the casing for a short spring. The surviving part of the lower bow is narrow and may once have had some decoration down the centre; the catchplate has broken away, and the foot is lost. There are possible traces of tinning or silvering.

The upper portion of a hinged bow brooch of Headstud type; very abraded. The pin, now lost, was originally held on a copper alloy bar in a closed cylindrical casing. There is a raised element at the head, recalling the hooks on sprung versions of the type; the top of the bow is apparently plain above the stud, which would have been enamelled. The lower part of the brooch is lost. The width of the brooch is 19mm and the width of the surviving upper part of the bow is 9.5mm.

The decoration consists of two concentric circles of triangular recesses inlaid with blue enamel, which survives quite well. The central circular depression apparently had no inlay. The depth of the brooch is 6mm, the maximum depth is 10.5, and the original width was c25mm. The spring and pin are missing.

Possibly the central part of an umbonate disc brooch, apparently with a high tin content. Below the present rim the broken edge projects downwards and not outwards, suggesting the original width of the object is present. There is no trace of either hinge or catchplate, which suggests that the object is not a brooch and may be of much later date
