A medieval brooch, consisting of a hoop, triangular in section, set with a collett at the top accommodating a coloured stone and terminating in a pair of clasped hands. The hands were designed to hold a stone, probably a pearl, which has now perished. The two registers formed by the triangular sections are engraved with letters that read
+ PAR CEST PRESENT M VERWSRENTENS

The meaning of this (rhyming?) French inscription is unclear but it almost certainly signifies a gift between two lovers. The brooch is gold and dates from the thirteenth century.
