'A fragment from a medieval brooch. The flat surface (reverse) is inscribed with: + A + This most probably comprises part of a full inscription which would have read A G L A and would have been arranged at equal distances around the frame of the brooch. The full inscription signifies Atha Gebri Lielan Adonai ('thou art mighty forever, O Lord) and was a popular charm against fever in the medieval period. The brooch fragment is silver-gilt and dates from the thirteenth century.' James Robinson, Dept of Prehistory and Europe, British Museum

A medieval copper alloy annular brooch with a flat circular frame, and a round-section copper-alloy wire pin wrapped around a pin constriction on the frame. The brooch is inscribed with a series of widely spaced capital letters, and there is a rough encircling groove which forms a border around the outside of the brooch, cutting through the upper parts of the letters. There is also a transverse groove to either side of the pin constriction. The inscription appears intended as MARIA, but only the letter M and I are clear, and the final A seems to be missing.
