A small copper alloy Roman Colchester variant brooch. The spring cover survives, the wings of which are quite narrow and taper to a blunt triangular shape on either side of the bow. The bow rises at an angle from the head of the brooch and turns sharply to form a relatively straight bow. The bow is sub-hexagonal in cross section and narrows in thickness towards the catchplate end, which is now entirely missing from an old break. Probably the arched bow-section of a Roman crossbow brooch. Consisting of a triangular-sectioned curved copper alloy bar with the flat edge on the outside of the curve and the inner edge slightly rounded. There are ancient transverse breaks at both ends, one of which narrows from the outer face in a sharp curve before the break. Surviving length 48mm. Thickness 7mm. Width of bar 12.5mm. 3rd-4th century AD.
