Roman copper alloy bow brooch, 45mm long, 16mm wide and 12mm thick. The brooch is in fair condition and weighs 11.74grams. The brooch has solid plain circular sectioned wings and a sub circular tapering bow which is also plain except for a linear recess running its length.

Roman copper alloy sitting bird brooch. It shows a heavily stylised duck like bird with a small head and circular recesses for eyes and a pointed beak. The body is triangular, with a semi-circular sectioned and tapering tail. The brooch is solid with a flat underside to which is attached a single loop, positioned under the birds fore body. Under the birds tail are the remains of two small loops, presumably to hold a spring bar with the loop acting as a catch plate? An cinomplete Roman copper-alloy Colchester derivative brooch of Mackreths Nene Valley group, dating to c.AD 60 - 150. Mackreth 2011, pl. 58, no. 2397, a CD H 6. The wings and upper bow remain, the lower bow, catchplate and pin are missing. The enclosed tubular wings appear to have iron corrosion from the pin. Below sits the triangular upper bow, the front is decorated with a boarder of dots. The bow terminates in an old worn break.
