An incomplete copper alloy lead brooch of uncertain date, similar in form to the Roman umbonate plate brooch. A convex boss protrudes from a flat plate. The plate edges have been broken Old break) but has the remains of knops. The boss is divided into facets  by five concentric ridges sub divided by ridges rising from the base to the apex. At the apex is a slight knop. At the base of the boss there appears to have a shallow groove. The facets do not contain the remains of any enamel. The reverse is concave. There is an&n…

The object is a brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Pattern). Usually these types of brooches date to the 1st to 2nd century, when they are made from copper alloy. However, this brooch is made from lead or lead alloy, and was made as the first stage to manufacturing brooches. The wings are semi-cylindrical with wing caps. The wings are now misshapen and slightly crumpled, This damage does not look too recent. The wing caps do not have the central hole, like their copper alloy comparisons. These holes would have held in place an axis bar. Also missing i…

A lead object, almost certainly a pattern for a Roman bow brooch. The object comprises an faceted and arched bow with a rib or flashing running vertically down its centre. At one end, the object flattens to a forward facing foot. At the other, there is a hollow arched section with folded over terminals perhaps intended to act as the brooch head. The object measures 40mm in length, 12mm in width, has a thickness of 9mm and a weight of 16.2g

A possible incomplete cast lead alloy or lead pattern for the manufacture of a two part Colchester derivative brooch. The brooch pattern has wings which on the reverse have an off-set surface, and are not cylindrical as perhaps may have been expected. In the centre of the reverse of the wings there is a slightly high-relief oval platform where normally this is the deepest area of the cylindrical wings of a brooch such as a Polden Hill brooch, The upper edge of the wings is slightly angular and the wing terminals are asymmetrical. The bow head, in profile is slightly hump-like and is s…

Medieval Nummular brooch, relief decoration on face, reverse with stumps of broken catch-plate aligned with outer edge and damaged transverse catch-plate. The basic design is relatively generic on pennies from the 11th to the 12th centuries. The nearest parallel, however, is to reverses of William I's Profile/Cross and trefoils type penny (North 847) dated to the early 1080s. William II's Profile type is also very similar and also close in date (North 851; late 1080s). Other types are similar but have a voided cross which this brooch does not. Thus, on the balance of probabilities, th…

A circular band inside the perimeter encloses the circles. Within a circular border of ring-and-dot in low relief there lies a bearded long-haired bust, which is the image of Jesus that appeared on a cloth used by St Veronica to wipe His face on His way to Calvary. Some details are obscured by concreted adherent soil. Such brooches were known as vernicles or veronicas. There is a damaged pin lug and catchplate on the reverse. The brooch has a …
