Copper alloy Plate Brooch. Cast rectangular plate with a central drilled aperture of diameter 3.3mm. The aperture falls in the middle of an equal armed cross with very slightly flaring arms. The design comprises sunken fields, each arm being 2.1mm wide, each with a central cabled or billeted rib 1.2mm wide standing in relief. A sunken compartment circa 4mm square is set in each angle of the cross; two opposed compartments are empty, the other pair are filled by a ground of blue enamel with a central round field of white enamel and a central round dot of red enamel. It appears possible…

Copper alloy and iron brooch fragment. Cast trapezoid plate with a collared knop to either side of its wider end, the stub of an indeterminate feature loop above, and a flat lug on the back retaining the corroded stub of an iron pin or spring. The display face of the plate bears moulded vertical flutes converging towards its broken narrower end. Although a top loop and collared knops might usually denote a Roman brooch, the iron pin gear may suggest a later date. The form might alternatively ally this to the Continental series of Roman plate brooches. Suggested date: Unknown Roman to …

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast fragment from a flat plate with part of a relief design on its display face; three adjacent pellets of which one is larger than the others and a curved line above them with uncertain extensions and intersecting a cabled border. Patinated overall. This fragmentary motif might derive at its earliest, from a Viking-Age plate brooch displaying Christian symbols; or a cheap medieval brooch; or a pilgrim badge of an indeterminate cult centre - oriented as illustrated, the eye of faith might discern Christ hanging on the cross to be the subject. Sugg…

The field on the display face is now apparently plain. Lightly patinated and folded. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval, 850-1500. Copper alloy and iron brooch fragment. Cast plain straight-sided bow of thickness 2.1mm with a stop at its upper end. Above this rises a half-round knob of two graduated stages with a collar and constriction between them. Behind the base of the knob, paired U-shaped lugs retain the iron stub of a pin. The main part of the bow stands proud of lower narrow edges, and has a further rectangular panel, possibly applied, set centrally at the apex of its curve. The bow is broken at the return of its curve and the pointed stub is smoothed by wear. A series of juxtaposed circular stamps runs d…

Lead alloy possible brooch. Hollow cast model apparently representing the head and bow of an Early Roman bow brooch at 1:1 scale. The types intended might include versions of a hinged Colchester Derivative brooch (e.g. Mackreth type CD H 10.e.) with an especially wide and fluted crest to its bow. The fluted bow also recalls the Langton down brooches. An axis bar appears to protrude from the ends of a widened fluted head whose decoration is continuous with that of a bow of hollow D section. As presented, the object lacks mechanical strength and, in this case, a hinged pin or spring to …

Copper alloy annular brooch. Cast narrow band annular brooch with a band which is beaded on its display side and flat on the back, retaining a cast collared pin which is looped around the frame. Rust staining of the surface is prominent on the display side though the object was tested with a magnet to confirm its non-ferrous nature. The narrow band annular brooch is a feature of later, generally late 6th to 7th-century, Early Anglo-Saxon furnished burials of adult women, though objects of much the same form enjoyed a renewed popularity in the high medieval period. Suggested date: Unkn…

Copper alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast terminal with a collared ball end set above or at one end of a slotted bar of width 8.2mm, the slot being 3mm wide. This resembles a side or top knob from a later Roman crossbow brooch or an early medieval cruciform brooch; in either case the slot on this object would be unexplained. The slotted bar continued for an uncertain further length; fiercely abraded. Helen Geake kindly suggests an alternative identification as an early Anglo-Saxon scabbard chape, commenting as follows: 'Is it one of these scabbard chapes of early AS date? common sha…

Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast discoid plate retaining paired lugs for a probably iron spring and an opposed catch plate. Extensive rust on the back may arise from decay of the pin and may incorporate mineral preserved textile traces. The front bears the bordered relict of a curvilinear design in which a reflective spot of enamel appears. This could perhaps suggest a brooch of Weetch type 18, c. AD800-900, though earlier plate brooches include the use of enamel in more symmetrical arrangements. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 100-1000 Diameter: 28.6mm, Thickness (pl…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a bow brooch with a concavo-convex mid-bow, with moulded borders or stops above and below, constricted lower bow with expanded square plate at its end. Most of a folded catch plate projects from behind the lower bow. Probably from a small cruciform or small long brooch, though its poor condition and some accompanying material might permit this to come from a late Roman brooch of uncertain form - the knee brooch series is perhaps the most likely candidate. Copper alloy bow brooch fragment. Cast sub-rectangular plate with opposed rounded lugs or lappets below it, and with two notches cut into one of its longer sides to give a localised saw-toothed effect; the lower bow tapers to a cross-shaped or knopped terminal. A folded catch plate remains behind the lower bow and foot. The plate bears horizontal grooves across the back of its upper part. The provision of a catch plate confirms this is part of a brooch while its overall form resembles that of a Roman Hod Hill brooch, though lacking any fluting or grooving of the display side and of unu…

Copper alloy disc brooch. A large plain disc with the stub of a small integrally cast loop at its edge; the loop coincides with the position of long paired U-shaped lugs on the back which retained a hinged pin; the stub of a small catch plate lies at the opposite edge of the plate. The lack of rust stains – a diagnostic trait for a brooch fastened with an iron pin – could suggest a Roman date, as might the length of the lugs at the pin seat [as discussed in the PAS Guide to brooches], though the disc form is more usually regarded as Anglo-Saxon. A Roman date is perhaps more…

An incomplete and slightly worn cast copper alloy Roman Polden Hill brooch. The long semi-tubular deep wings are concave behind and house a spring mechanism. The copper alloy axis bar is held by a rounded pierced lug at the end of each wings and the worn spring has fourteen turns and possibly had a missing rearward claw. The wings are decorated with a knurled rib and the head has a crest with a moulded appendage on either side. Both the wings and head are covered with a thin layer of iron corrosion. Probably an incomplete cast copper alloy Roman bow and fantail brooch. Behind the rectangular head is a semi cylindrical moulding with central slot for the missing hinged pin mechanism. Iron corrosion on the head and wings suggests that the pin mechanism may have been iron. On top of the head is an incomplete integral chain loop. The short rectangular bow steps down to a worn and incomplete triangular leg at a midway point. The surviving length is 27.0mm, the width is 15.3mm and the weight is 2.82g.

The tip of the head has an asymmetrically set notch, the sides of which are folded back to secure the pin hinge, one side of which is missing. The mechanism was a hinge type, but both the axis bar and the pin are missing. Traces of iron corrosion around the hinge suggest that parts of the mechanism were iron.
