Early medieval copper alloy/iron brooch fragment?, 18mm long, 17mm wide 4mm thick. It is in fair condition with a weight of 2.37grams. The object material resembles iron and where its damaged its structure does look like iron, but it has traces of copper corrosion suggesting it may have copper alloy core? The object has three distinct patches of gilding (one below the right eye), which should appear on the close up image. The object is trefoil in form and rectangular in section. Probable Anglo-Saxon iron annular brooch. The brooch is flat, 14mm wide and has a very corroded surface. Parts of the perimeter are damaged.
Similar annular brooches are frequent finds on Anglo-Saxon cemetery sites and are well known from published local sites such as Fonaby, Cleatham, Lovenden Hill and Castledyke.

Possible incomplete iron Strip brooch length 31mm, width 10mm, thickness 13mm, weight 4.01g. The top of the brooch has been rolled back to form a narrow tube, this has a lot in the centre at the rear for the pin, only the top part of the pin remains. The whole of the artefact is heavily encrusted with corrosion obscuring any detail. The bow is truncated about halfway down resulting in the loss of the catchplate.

A fragment of a late Iron Age to Roman, iron bow brooch (circa 25-100 AD). The bow has a circular cross-section and the head, pin, spring and catchplate are all missing. This may be a fragment of a late Iron Age one-piece' 'Nauheim derivative' brooch. Other Nauheim-derivative brooches have been found during the military occupation at sites such as Usk and Castleford (Manning 1995:64-66 fig 22 & Cool & Philo 1998:34-5). The brooch has a bilateral four-turn spring with internal chord, only one turn and the chord remains, the pin is missing. Incomplete Late Iron Age or Roman iron penannular brooch of Fowler type C. This simple brooch is formed from a single circular sectioned piece of wire, curved into a C shaped hoop. The ends of the wire are spiralled and then bent at a right angle to the plane of the hoop. One spiralled terminal is missing, as is the pin. The brooch has a diameter of 26.18mm and the hoop is 1.82mm wide and 1.8mm thick. The spiral terminal is 4.98mm wide. The brooch weighs 1.16g. Late Iron Age iron bow brooch, possibly of La Tène III type and dated to the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD
The brooch is incomplete and is missing the leg and pin, with a surviving length of 37.28mm and a weight of 5.2g. The brooch was of a one-piece construction and made of iron rod of circular section. The spring has four coils with an internal chord (4.3mm diameter), passing beneath the head. The head has a width of 14.61mm. The bow curves gently from the head and is straight along the mid bow. The bow has a maximum surviving diameter of 5.40mm.

An iron and copper-alloy artefact, possibly representing part of a Late Iron Age to Early Roman 'Birdlip' type brooch.
The main portion of the artefact is of iron, with a bow-shaped copper-alloy moulding having been sleeved on to this and located one third of the way along its length. The lower two thirds of the iron portion has a flat upper surface and straight sides which converge to point. An incised pattern of herringbone decoration extends the length of this upper surface, surviving most clearly at the top. A right-angled projection is located on the underside of this portion.…

The bow has a flat oval section with a near right angled bend at the top. This is likely to be a Late Iron Age La Tene III, simple one-piece, Nauheim Derivative bow brooch. A large, incomplete, iron, bow brooch. The circular section bow is complete and still retains half of the 4 coiled spring with its internal chord passing under the bow. It gradually tapers in and at the foot it is clear that the catchplate was framed, perforated with probably a triangular shaped hole. This item has been conserved with clear varnish.
