A fragment of a small Early Medieval copper-alloy cruciform brooch. Length: 22.1mm; width: 14.2mm; thickness: 3.2mm; mass: 3.1g. The fragment consists of a zoomorphic (horse-head) terminal from the foot of a brooch. The fragment has a broken edge at the top, very slightly concave edges at the sides, and a sub-oval extension at the bottom. The reverse of the fragment is flat and undecorated, but the front is in relief, decorated with ridges and grooves. There are ridges defining the eyebrows, a ridge down the snout/nose, and a series of grooves forming nested V shapes at the base. T…

Cast copper-alloy brooch fragment. Mass: 7.7g, length: 33.8mm, width: 20.4mm, depth: 11.1mm. Early-medieval, possibly from a small long brooch or a small square headed brooch (5th/6th century AD). The fragment consists of an incomplete head - an irregularly shaped plate with incomplete edges - attached to an arched bow, also with incomplete edges. There are the corroded remains of the iron pin mechanism on the reverse of the head, attached to an integral vertical copper-alloy lug. The fragment has a pitted green surface, with a well developed patina remaining in parts. There are also …

Early-medieval one-piece circular or cross-shaped brooch consisting of a circular plate with a rectangular projection at the top which curls backwards and under to form an integral wire spring. The plate has two angled, oval perforations in the upper part and two corresponding curved edges within the incomplete lower portion of the plate, giving a cross-shaped effect. The plate is slightly concave (probably bent), and broken at the bottom so that one arm of the cross is missing. The spring is broken at the end, which projects downwards below the wound loop; the rest of the pin is miss…

Gilded cast copper-alloy brooch fragment, probably from an Early Anglo-Saxon small square headed brooch (late 5th/6th century). Mass: 7.5g, length: 18.1mm, width: 25.5mm, depth: 9.1mm. The fragment consists of a broadly rectangular head-plate which is broken at the bottom. The front of the head-plate is decorated with incised decoration. There is a sub-rectangular central feature, surrounded by a grooved border, beyond with there are curved and straight lines, within two (incomplete) outer borders, the inner of which is grooved. The front of the brooch is gilded, and much of the gildi…

A cast gilded copper-alloy fragment of what may be an early medieval, Anglo-Saxon brooch or mount. The gilding and what appears to be chip carved decoration are, at any rate, suggestive of early medieval craftsmanship. It is possible that it is the top, bottom or the tip of the arms of an Anglo-Saxon bow brooch, although as the fragment is broken on three of its edges determining this with any certainty is difficult. The decorative field seems to consist of four elements, each set within the arms of a central cross. The design is geometric, with a quatrefoil with a ring and dot in eac…

A cast copper-alloy early-medieval Anglo Saxon small long brooch. The brooch is almost complete, lacking only its pin on the reverse. It suffers from corrosion however, and is encrusted as well as suffering from active bronze disease. The brooch has been cast in one piece and has a rectangular head above an arched bow. Below this arch in the bow there is a flat rectangular panel from which the catchplate projects on the reverse. This panel has a moulded horizontal collar at the top and a double moulded collar below. Below this the bow terminates in a sub-triangular foot. The pin mecha…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. Only the upper part of the head remains, consisting of three worn shovel-shaped wings, one at the top of the head, the other two to either side of the head. The central square plate of the plate is decorated with a series of double inverted V's giving the appearance of arrows. The regularity of these motifs makes it likely that they were punched rather than inscised. This decoration runs around the central square plate and there is also a line of the same type of decoration which runs across the widest part of each wing, …

A gilded copper-alloy cloisonné brooch dating from the late Early Medieval period. The brooch is incomplete but is clearly of a type of cloisonné enamel brooch that was popular in England during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries AD. As it is incomplete it is a little difficult to determine for certain whether it falls within the flanged 'Colchester' type or the the lobed 'Saunderton' type of brooch (as distinguised by David Buckton in 'Late 10th and IIth century cloisonné enamel brooches' Medieval Archaeol 30, 1986, 8-18). The flat reverse and the damaged edges, which per…

A copper-alloy fragment from what is just possibly an early medieval, Anglo-Saxon brooch. The fragment is possibly a terminal from a bow brooch, although given that it is such a small fragment this is somewhat speculative. One side of the broken rectangular shaped object has moulded decoration comprising two circles (or rings), side by side, whilst part of a third circle is visible below and between the others at the break. The fragment measures 30.47 mm long, 19.81 mm wide, 2.38 mm thick and weighs 4.4 grams. The fragement has a dark green patina on the reverse and on much of…

A small fragment of what is probably an early medieval Anglo-Saxon brooch, probably of Great Square Headed type. As such, it probably dates to the sixth century AD. The fragment is copper-alloy with heavily encrusted ferrous corrosion on the reverse, probably relating to the pin mechanism. The front is decorated with engraved decoration comprising two groups of concentric rings either side of a 'T' shaped wedge. This wedge also includes a raised circular boss, probably integrally cast, within an oval setting. Further possible settings are situated above and below the 'T'. Gilding rema…

A copper-alloy brooch pin, probably from a penannular brooch of early medieval date. It is possibly from a Fowler Type F brooch, although the absence of the brooch itself makes this speculative. The pin is bent, particularly at the pointed end where it is bent almost at a right angle. In its bent form the pin measures 67.76 mm long. The pin is oval in section and tapers from 2.62 mm thick just below the head to 1.2 mm at the tip of its point. The pin widens and becomes thinner at the head and is curled over for attachment to the brooch frame. At the head it measures 8.99 mm wide. It i…

A fragment of an early medieval copper alloy cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of an incomplete head plate with a central panel, incomplete wings and an integral top knob. The front of the rounded knob is broadly flat with a horizontal groove towards the base. The central panel runs from top to bottom of the head plate, with straight sides which diverge towards the break at the base of the head plate. The wings are incomplete, particularly on one side which only retains a fragment beyond the central panel. In profile, the rounded knob protrudes beyond the central panel on t…

A fragment of an early medieval copper alloy cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of a zoomorphic (horse-head) terminal with a spatulate extension. This fragment is from the foot of a brooch (e.g. see cruciform brooches in "A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals)" by MacGregor and Bolick, 1993, pp. 95-111). The fragment described here has a broken edge at the top, curved edges at the sides forming the zoomorphic shape, and an almost rectangular extension at the base with curves corners. The forehead of the horse-head is slightly raised, and terminate…

Approx. half of the brooch remains. Decoration consists of zigzag incised lines with notches around the outside edge. The brooch has a slight convex curvature.
Helen Geake writes: This sounds like an early Anglo-Saxon flat annular brooch, although in the absence of an image it is impossible to be certain. Accordingly, the original date range quoted (410-1066 AD) has been changed to 450-600 AD.

The brooch is broken into two fragments, the break appears to be an old break. The two fragments are slightly distorted, i.e. are no longer flat. The upper surface of the brooch is decorated with three central concentric rings of varying widths and at varying distances apart. The outer edge has a series of seven ring and dot designs. Some of the dots have become holes. The upper surface has a matte grey coating. The reverse of the brooch is covered with a black substance, possibly carbon due to burning. The catchplate is folded to become flat, and the hinge lug is incomplete.

The centre of the brooch has a small dome, around which are probably debased zoomorphic features. The central dome is made or coloured with a red ?enamel. The surface of the dome is slightly ?pitted. The zoomorphic features are high-relief and are not symmetrical, consisting of pellets (possibly eyes), 'P'-shapes, and slightly curved rectangular shapes. These components of the design have fine incised grooves to add detail to the design. There are traces of gilding. These features are bordered by two concentric rings of pellets which vary in width slightly. The edge of the brooch is he…

The cruciform brooch fragmentdepicts a human face with a long beard. The face has a wide nose which is triangular and leading into long, wide eyebrows. The eyes are asymmetrical - one is slightly larger than the other. The cheeks are high-relief, one being more circular in shape than the other. Above the eyebrows there is a horizontal band - a hat or head band - which is decorated with vertical blocks. Either side of the upper portion of the head there is irregular protrusions, which perhaps represents hair. These protrusions are abraded, and may not be the original edge. The beard is…
