Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type, dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD The brooch is fragmentary and is represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 21.9mm and a weight of 7.8g). The hinged-pin is secured within tubular wings (with a width of 24.8mm). The wing diameters narrow towards their terminals (where they have a diameter of 5.3mm). Iron corrosion adhering to the head suggests that an iron axis bar was employed. There is no decoration surviving on the wings. The bow is of oval section (with a width at the head of 10.1mm and a thickness of 7.7mm). The s…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch probably of Alesia variant or Aucissa variant type and of 1st century AD date. The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin and foot and is distorted (with a distorted length of 41.5mm, a distorted depth of 22.2mm and a weight of 4.6g). The missing pin was hinged within the rolled-head (with a width of 9.5mm and a diameter of 6.5mm). The bow is of rectangular section (1.8mm thick at the head), with straight sides converging towards the leg. The surface of the bow is worn and it is now difficult to discern any decoration. There is the suggestion of incised …

The brooch has broken at the end of the hinged terminal (with a maximum surviving width of 7.3mm). The mid-section is of rectangular section (with a thickness of 3.6-4.4mm) with concave sides. The front of the bow is decorated with three square recessed cells for enamel. The lower two cells retain the enamel, which is now brown. The brooch thins and na…

Roman copper alloy enamelled plate brooch of 2nd century AD date The brooch is of oval form with six equidistant peripheral lugs, one now lost and is near-complete, missing the pin but is slightly distorted (with a distorted length of 35.9mm, a maximum width of 20.7mm, a distorted depth of 8.0mm, a thickness of 2.1mm and a weight of 5.0g). The missing pin was hinged between two perforated lugs, positioned behind the apex of the brooch, rather than the peripheral lug. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch of 1st-century post-Conquest date, missing its head and foot. The central part of the bow survives, decorated with four longitudinal ridges with grooves between. The grooves flanking that in the centre appear to feature incised wrigglework in the usual zig-zag form. The artefact has broken at one end of the bow, presumably as it transitioned into the head. The sides are also abraded and their nature unclear. At the other short end of the bow the junction with the catch-plate is marked by two transverse grooves between transverse rid…

The missing spring would have coiled around a single pierced lug on the rear of the head. Remnants of iron corrosion indicate that the axis bar was iron and suggest the spring may also have been iron. An incomplete copper-alloy T-shaped Roman brooch. The wings are circular in cross-section. The pin is missing, except for the hinge. The bow is oval in cross-section, narrowing towards the foot. On the outside there is an empty triangular cell. There does not appear to be any other decoration, but this may be due to the brooch's condition which is worn and pitted. There is a central 'loop' at the top of the wings, but it has not been drilled out, or cast correctly originally.

A fragment of a Roman Trumpet derivative brooch (c. 2nd century AD), consisting of head and beginnings of the bow. The head features a large headplate which expands from the top of the wings and terminates in a broken integrally cast central loop. Patches of whitemetal coating remain, on the leg especially. The brooch measures 29.6 mm in length, 6 mm wide, and weighs 2.2 grams. A Roman copper alloy hinged T shaped brooch dating to c.AD 50-150. The wings each have two deeply incised transverse grooves and are circular in cross-section. There is a slot in the centre to hold the pin, which does not survive. The bow starts from the top rather than the front of the head, arching above it in the distinctive 'dolphin' form. It then curves through 180 degrees in a shallow but continuous curve to the foot. It tapers in width evenly from the top to the pointed foot. The bow is oval in section at the top, becoming circular in section about half of the way down. The up…

The central and outer cell are empty, but the inner cell contains considerable quantities of glossy red enamel. The back is flat and plain, except for the remains of two lugs; both the pin lug and the catch-plate have abraded through. The side of this brooch has been bent downwards as a result of old damage. For similar disc brooches see illustrations in Hattatt (2000, 344; refs. 1027, 1028).
