Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch fragment, lower bow and part of the flat panel from a early Anglo-Saxon brooch. There is a longitudinal decorative band running down the centre of the bow and below the bow transverse grooves delimit the start of the flat panel. Surviving length is 17.94mm and width is 17.38mm. All edges worn and damaged due to old breaks. Both faces are black probably due to exposure to fire, perhaps indicating that this brooch was originally from a cremation cemetary.

A copper-alloy disc brooch of 'hub-cap' type, most likely to be AD 900-1100, late Anglo-Saxon in date. Very similar to examples from Wyverstone, see SF-E66913 and Mellis, see SF-7F2271. Surrounding this central setting there are seven circular indentations. The back face is flat and has a pin loop, now incomplete opposite a catchplate. No trace of the pin survives. It is fairly worn and has some patches of powdery green corrosion.

A copper alloy early medieval disc brooch. It is circular 23.85mm in diameter, 1mm in thickness and weighs 3.21g. The brooch is extremely worn, but a faint trace of a human head can be seen with a possible halo behind. A face can just be determined, and there are some angular depressions below, perhaps representing shoulders. To either side there is a cross with irregular rounded arms. One bears traces of red enamel and the other of blue/black enamel. On the reverse side close to the edges of the brooch are the remains of a catchplate, with one complete loop and one catch, with a cuta…

A cast copper alloy late Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian bird brooch. It is in the form of a bird of prey and is complete with the exception of the pin that is missing due to old breaks. The bird has a triangular tail with moulded decoration consisting of two smaller triangles one inside the other. Where the tail joins the body is a lozenge shaped moulded area containing two smaller lozenges, again one inside the other. The body itself is decorated with a series of moulded grooves and chevrons designed to represent feathers. From the top of the body projects a small triangular wing with tran…

Description: A fragment of a silver possible Anglo-Saxon brooch. This fragment has old breaks on all edges and is now roughly triangular in shape. The front face has traces of worn possibly chip carved decoration, what is depicted is very unclear. The back face is rough and also worn. Dimensions:10.66mm by 10.41mm in size, 2.38mm in thickness and 0.83g in weight. Discussion: This fragment is really too small to identify its original function but a brooch fragment, possibly from a square headed brooch does seem likely. The precious metal content of this possible brooch f…

Description: A fragment of a possible silver gilt Anglo Saxon brooch, perhaps a fragment of the catch plate area of a square headed brooch. The fragment is very worn and none of the edges appear to be original. It is roughly rectangular in shape but one short edge is diagonal. The chip carving consists of four border grooves and the surviving part of the design within these appears to depict the lower halves of two scroll like motifs with a pellet between them. One of these motifs may have an open work hole through it or this could be due to wear or damage. On the back face there…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Small-long brooch of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. Only the headplate survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The headplate is flat, rectangular in form with oval shaped notches at the top corners and at the base. It has an incised border that is visible at the edges of each side and at the top, but appears to otherwise be undecorated. On the back face is an integrally cast semi-circular pin lug that is encrusted with iron corrosion and staining resultant from the now missing pin. The entire object measures 21.34mm…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin, possibly a brooch pin or a cosmetic pick of Early-Medieval date. It is missing the top of the suspension loop due to old breaks. The pin is formed from a single piece of copper-alloy that is hammered or rolled to create a cylindrical shaft that tapers to a sharp point and has a vertical seam on one side. At the top the pin expands to a flattened head that is sub-triangular in form and missing its top due to old breaks. This has an incomplete central circular aperture. The entire object measures 49.38mm in length, 7.44mm in width at head, 3.06mm in …
