Copper alloy humped lozenge shaped plate brooch (type as Hattatt no.1114, Riha 1979 no 1640). Missing pin (which was hinged, one lug also missing) and one side knob. White metal survives on most of the front. It differs from the cited parallels and from most Suffolk e.g.s in being narrower with only 2 central dot in circle motifs rather than 3 and with a simplified punched dot design on the upper and lower bow. A damaged e.g. from Pakenham (PKM 005) may be similar. Length 31mm.

Copper alloy 'composite' plate brooch. Missing foot with catchplate, and pin. The head has an open loop with 'crenellations' around it. The central part is hollow-backed; it has a central rectangular plate with damaged cross ribs (the central one is notched) and has broad concave mouldings above and below. Surviving length 28mm. No close parallels identified. Hattatt discusses the crenellated head (on his no. 1125, also on no 145) and suggests that the distribution is mainly Rhineland. Riha 1979 nos. 1686,1687 have similar central panels (orientated 90 degrees different) with crescent heads

This joins a hemi-cylindrical ?spring cover with pierced end plates (broken across the holes) for holding an axis bar, but also a hole on the centre front. Joining the opposite side of the spring cover is a flat disc with central hole and two concentric rings of pale creamy enamel. No comparable brooch identified but the spring cover would relate to some knee brooches and the enamel disc to 2nd century types? Surviving length 23mm, width 18mm.

Copper alloy penannular brooch fragment. Half of the ring, missing pin, fairly corroded. Circular section ring, diam. 3 mm, with closely set transverse grooves on the outer face, undecorated (grooves worn away?) at the back. The terminal is slightly expanded, flattened and almost rectangular with a lozengiform moulding on the outer face and another V-shaped moulding joining the terminal to the rest of the frame. This is a highly devolved zoomorphic form, as Fowler type E and Hattatt no 656. Current (limited) chronological data suggests this type was a late Roman contemporary of the c…

Copper-alloy conical disc brooch, missing pin and part of the outer ring of the main body. The pin was hinged on two close set lugs, both now blocked with corrosion, probably copper alloy from the pin bar. Opposite the lugs is an incomplete catchplate. The central cone has a hollow hemispherical setting at the top, within which a small knob is lower than the sides. The cone has three concentric ribs at the base; the outer one has fine incised lines across it. Large dragonesque brooch, complete apart from the end of the pin. Both head and foot are identical, each in the shape of a 'dragon' head. The eye is made from a bold ring-and-dot, and the curled-up snout ends in a circular lobe decorated with five punched dots (unclear on the foot due to corrosion). The ears are formed from an oval lobe divided into two by a tall ridge; either side of the ridge are champlevé cells for enamel. These have a keyed surface but all the enamel is now missing. The neck and foot curve in towards a widened body which is decorated with more champlevé cells, a…
