Copper alloy brooch, depicting a sitting chicken. Missing most of pin; damaged catchplate and damaged and bent tail; hole in one enamel cell.The pin is hinged between two close set lugs below the tail. The underside of the body and neck is hollow. The head has small punched circles for eyes and triangles with a trace of blue enamel in the comb and the wattle. The enamelled cells on each side of the body consist of two crescents at the top, with traces of blue in some, and a row of triangualr shapes at the bottom, again with some blue enamel, and a larger curvilinear shape between the …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bow brooch of Colchester Derivative rearhook type dating to the Roman period, c. 43-100 AD. It survives virtually complete, with the exception of the spring/pin mechanism and the rear portion of the catchplate. The brooch demonstrates a hemi-spherically sectioned winged head with a rearward facing hook projecting from its midpoint on the reverse face of the object. Copper alloy brooch, equal-ended type with lozenge shaped plate and zoomorphic terminals. Missing terminal with pin loop and pin; incomplete lozenge shaped plate. The snake head terminal has a punched dot eyes, punched V-shapes for scales and a strong V-shaped moulding at the neck. The central lozenge has two concentric circles of copper alloy at the middle, both containing orange enamel. An incomplete copper-alloy umbonate disc brooch (compare Hattatt 1987, 179). The chain-loop is incomplete with only a lower fragment surviving; the pin is missing, apart from a fragment between the two pierced lugs. The edges of the brooch are worn and incomplete. On the front, a deep channel marks the edge of the main raised area which is decorated with two concentric circles of triangular indentations which retain traces of enamel within them. A copper-alloy Roman headstud type bow brooch, this is a British type of brooch and production starts in the later 1st century and continues into the 2nd century. Missing most of pin otherwise complete. It has short deep wings with moulding forming two steps from the wing tips to the bow. The chain loop is cast, worn, broken and distorted. Copper alloy spring from a Roman bow brooch. Only two coils remain with part of the wire being straight, perhaps where it attached to the brooch. This was found in the same field as an incomplete Roman brooch so it is possible that it is from this brooch. The brooch is recorded on the database as LVPL-9A3D92.

Colchester derivative Polden Hill brooch (folded wings, Eastern Group) type, incomplete and missing lower bow, foot, catchplate, spring and pin. Measuring 18.31mm in survving length and 27.84mm in width. The semi-cylindrical wings are extended and folded round to form a short fully enclosed section at both ends, which held the axis bar, fragments of this bar remain. A fragment of a copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a horse, only the head, neck and a fragment of the body now survives, the rest of it is missing due to old breaks. Very similar to a more complete example in Hattatt no.1182 (Hattatt, 1989, 359, fig 218, no 1182). It measures 23.26mm in height and 15.19mm in surviving width. The lower bow and foot of a copper-alloy Roman, 3rd century AD crossbow brooch, most similar to Hattatt no 101. Measuring 44.14mm in surviving length and 4.57mm in width. The bow is roughly D-shaped in section with a flat inner face and central longitudinal ridge. At its base there is a transverse moulded semi-circular projection and below this a less pronounced bulge. The foot is U-shaped in section and tapers to a rounded point, the back face is hollow to accmodate the pin, and the catchplate is now fragmentary due to old breaks. The brooch has a white metal coating.

A copper alloy Roman bow brooch fragment, Langton Down type. It has a cylindrical spring cover, partly un-curled in the centre and exposing four coils of the spring within. Both ends of the spring case are incomplete. The case is decorated on the front with double incised lines along the top. The bow is flat-backed, and the front is decorated with reeding, consisting of several ribs with central grooves. The catchplate is missing, as is the pin.
