Fragment of lead-alloy nummular brooch. Just a tiny scrap of the edge survives, with relief decoration consisting of a border of ladder pattern, an inner border of pellets, and an inner field of geometrically intersecting straight lines. On the reverse is a transverse pin lug. These brooches are so called because they are ultimately derived from coins; the borders are imitating the filigree settings that were added to coins to make the originals. The fragment measures 22 x 13 mm; the brooch would originally have been about 40 mm in diameter.

A fragment of a lead-alloy nummular brooch, so called because their designs are ultimately derived from coins. Part of one edge of this brooch now survives, the fragment is slightly distorted and measures 24mm by 20mm in size and would have an original diameter of c40mm when complete. The fragment is decorated on its front face with relief decoration consisting of a double border of pellets; this border is likely to be imitating the filigree settings that were added to coins to make the originals. The inner field is decorated with straight lines and cuvilinear lines with transverse li…

An incomplete and damaged lead alloy late Anglo-Saxon nummular brooch, two adjoining parts of which survive. Both of these are bent and distorted and will be discussed together. The brooch would have originally have been circular in shape and now measures circa 36mm in diameter. The original diameter is likely to have been larger as the surviving edges of the brooch are now bent backwards, reducing its present diameter. The front face is decorated with five concentric rings of pellets around an unclear central motif which is circular in outline and may have had a cross within it …

An incomplete cast lead-alloy probable sub-nummular brooch of Weetch's type Type 4.A (with straight-armed cross motif) dating c. 900-1000. Although forms also occur on the continent it is unclear if these brooches were imported directly or made locally. However, they do represent continued cross-influence in brooch fashions in the North Sea region (Weetch 2014, 288). The pin and fittings on the rear of the brooch are largely broken away in old damage, though the object otherwise survives in tact. The front of the object demonstrates moulded decoration in the form of a cross with…

A fragment of an Early Medieval lead-alloy pseudo-nummular brooch dating to circa AD 875-1050. The extant fragment comprises of a small arc of the edge. The front face has a chip carved border groove near the edge and two recognisable symbols of two wedge shaped arms of a cross and a 'C' shape with an adjoining reverse curve at the top. These two symbols are also chip carved into the face. The reverse is plain but worn and has a slightly convex surface. The design is redolent of SF-234D38 (although this brooch has raised symbols). Consequently, this places it in Weetch's Type 2.A…

An incomplete lead early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) disc brooch. The centre of the outer face is decorated with simple raised lines forming a five pointed star-shape surrounded by irregularly positioned raised pellets . This is followed by three raised concentric lines dividing the remaining area into three circles. The inner and outer of these circles are filled with circles of raised pellets, whilst the central circle is filled with alternating groups of two and three raised transverse lines. To the reverse there is the remains of a single lug pin fitting to one side and a catch-pl…

An incomplete lead alloy early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) nummular (coin-like) brooch. It is disc-shaped and the design on the outer face imitates contemporary coinage. To the reverse there is the remains of a double lug pin fitting to one side and a small catch-plate remains intact at the other end. The outer face is decorated with a central voided cross formed from two pairs of crossed lines, surrounded by an inner circle and then a garbled legend of alternating raised crosses and letters. Only the letters '+C+I+C+[...]' can be read. It survives in fair condition, but there is some dama…

A complete lead alloy Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) nummular brooch.  Discoidal in plan and flat the front face is decorated with a human figure holding a staff and with a crown, sat on a bench holding a figure, either a child or animal, within a border of raised pellets or beads. This brooch fits a group of late Saxon disc brooches which copy, or appear to copy coinage of the period see Weetch (2013:15-16 fig no176,179), with the variants being divided by whether they copy obverse or reverse designs. To the reverse is an intergral pin and catchplate, which are …
