An incomplete copper alloy Roman hinged plate brooch of 1st century AD date. The plate is flat and sub-circular in shape, tapering towards a pointed terminal at the base, which is now missing due to old breaks. In addition to the terminal at the base of the brooch, approximately one quarter of the upper half of the brooch is missing due to an old break, as are any knops or projections that may once have existed around the periphery of the plate. On the front face of the plate is a central decorative motif consisting of a large circular depression that contains a raised circle at its ce…

An incomplete and worn copper alloy Roman bow brooch, Colchester type, dating to the first century AD. The brooch is missing the spring, parts of the wings, and catchplate due to old breaks. It has the remains of two short and flat wings, with part of the integral spring projecting backwards from the point where the two wings meet. Above the wings is a slight projection that marks the start of the now missing integral flattened hook, which would have bent forwards onto the front of the bow. The bow itself is oval in section, curves sharply at the shoulder and tapers towards a sharp poi…

A very worn and incomplete copper alloy Roman rosette brooch of 1st century AD date. Only a small portion of the disc and spring case survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The spring case would have been cylindrical in shape and contained a now missing spring and pin. The disc is worn to an oval shape and is missing the applique front that would once have been attached to it. Around the edge of the disc is a circumferential groove, and at the centre is the small circular rivet that would have held the applique in place. The rivet has a small cylindrical shaft and large…
