An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative, double-pierced lug brooch, dating 43-100 AD. The bow is broadly triangular in profile due to the presence of a prominent longitudinal ridge that runs down its midpoint. The brooch foot and catch plate is missing entirely, this part of the brooch having broken off in antiquity as the break is patinated and worn. A copper-alloy fragment of a Roman brooch, probably of the Colchester Derivative type, dating to AD 43-120. All that remains is the foot of the brooch. The back of the foot has a triangular catch-plate, which is pierced with a triangular hole and has a forward curled rear edge which is partly broken from an old break. The arched bow is D-shaped in cross-section, measures 4.8mm maximum width, 2.8mm thickness at the head and tapers to 1.2mm width, 0.9mm thickness at the foot. Overall length is 35.6mm. The wings have been reduced by wear and corrosion to two sub-conical stubs measuring a total width of 8.2 mm and behind them is an upwardly curving stub which is all that remains of the integrally-cast spring mechanism.
