A complete cast copper alloy double horse-head plate brooch, possibly Roman in date but potentially a modern creation. The brooch has a curved rectangular panel bar that curves downwards and is filled with yellow enamel. The terminals of the bar has three incised grooves within the copper that are reminiscent of an animal's paws. Projecting from the centre of the lower side of the curved bar is a short neck that leads into two opposing horse heads. The horse heads are depicted in profile and face outwards from the centre of the brooch. They are equidistant either side of the neck. The …

A complete copper alloy Roman plate brooch in the form of a stylised bird. Unusual in form, the brooch has a central rectangular plate with central panel decorated with two complete lozenges with triangles at each side decorated with ring-and-dot decoration. Triangles border the central panel both above and below, and all were inlaid with enamel, however this has now degraded from the cells. A projection from the rear of the brooch forms a roughly triangular 'tail', again with cells of degraded enamel. The spring pin has two turns and is complete, as is the extended catchplate. No d…

Cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch. The brooch is lonzengiform with four sub-circular cupped lugs, one projecting from each corner. In the centre of the lozenge is a raised circular boss surmounted with a shallow cupped bowl - smaller than the ones forming the lugs. The shallow cup in each lug and the one in the central roundel are all stained with orange corrosive product; it is likley that they contained enamel. On the reverse are the remains of the pin hinge and sub-triangular catchplate - the pin is missing. The brooch has a rich mid brown patina and is in good overall condit…

Roman copper alloy T-shaped brooch with serrated edges, Hull's type 144 with the Polden Hill side lugs, complete except for the missing enamel decoration. It also appears to have an additional forward-facing hook of a different (poorer) copper alloy to both the brooch and the chord and spring. The lower bow and foot are bent to one side. The wings span 24.3mm and are C-shaped in section. The side lugs extend backwards on a slight inward angle. The lugs hold the axis bar on which is at least an 8-coiled spring, at least nine. The pin however is also of a different copper alloy (which…
