A cast copper alloy knop, possibly from a brooch. Due to the fact the knop is the only surviving piece, it is not possible to date it. The knop has a circular, flat terminal, which is joined to a spherical central piece. The outer surface of the sphere is coated in corroded iron, suggesting that it was joined to a larger item at this junction. The metal is slightly pitted and is a mid greyish-green colour.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Dragonesque brooch. This type of brooch is essentially Celtic in design but is Roman made and continued to be made until the middle of teh 2nd century AD. They are an entirely British type of brooch (Hattatt; 1982; 152). The brooch has a raised surface and a flat back. Two of the heads remain, there would have been three originally. Both the heads are broken, the hole (which represents the eye) is incomplete on both. The semi-circle central part of the brooch represents the body of the dragon and has a circular perforation.

Copper alloy Roman disc brooch dating to the mid 1st century to the late second century AD. The disc is not complete so it cannot be sure whether it was circular or oval. Some of the catchplate and pin mechanism remain but the pin is missing. The front of the brooch is decorated with a raised hexagonal pattern with a small disc at the end of each point. This could be derived from the Roman sunburst pattern. A similar brooch can be seen in Hattatt (1982; 138/9; no.118).

An incomplete cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date. The pin and catchplate no longer survive. The object has the distinctive animal-head terminals with a curled nose and large ears. The nose and eyes are shown with an incised circle-dot motif. On the outside of each curve is a sweeping, integral addition which is wide at the end towards the underside of the head and narrows until it's flush with the body of the brooch. In the centre of the brooch are three cells for enamel decoration. One is crescent-shaped and took red enamel; the middle cell is triangular and still has…

The body of a copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The body is S-shaped and is 30.0mm long and 15.5mm wide. The brooch is decorated with four oval depressions, two of which have white, red and blue enamel remaining, and traces of white enamel may be visible in a third. Each of these oval depressions is bounded by fine raised lines of copper alloy. The reverse is undecorated. Both end of the body of the brooch are broken; however, it is probably that both ends would have terminated in stylised animal heads. The reverse of the brooch is un…

Probably the end of a copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The fragment represents a stylised animal head. The head of the animal is decorated with five linear grooves and there is a large sub-circular hole which may represent an eye. Beyond the hole are two protrusions with rounded ends, which together may represent a mouth. Below the head is a curving protrusion, probably representing the animal's neck. The brooch is broken at this point, but would probably have extended into an S-shape, terminating in another animal head. The reverse …

Probably the end of a copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The fragment probably represents a stylised animal head, although no details of the animal can be distinguished. The fragment is trefoil - one lobe is domed and the other two have a thin, curved rib along the centre. There is no other decoration, and the reverse is flat and undecorated. This fragment probably formed the terminal to an S-shaped brooch, with another animal head at the other terminal. The break is extremely worn. The fragment is 17.3mm long and 12.6mm wide. A simila…

A copper alloy disc brooch from the Roman period. It is circular and has a diameter of 30.85mm and is 9.5mm thick. There is a circular hole in the centre of the brooch, so it probably had a central decorative stud. The face is divided into two large concentric cells. The outer band contains many traces of blue and white glass in a chequer board pattern. The design is made up from separate tiny rods of glass (millefiori). The inner cell contains a few traces of a red material, probably enamel applied in the normal way. The metal is quite grey, suggesting it may have been tinned or silv…
