Description: Incomplete gold crossbow brooch with a sheath foot, crossbar and pin missing. The top of the trapezoidal-sectioned, highly arched bow broadens to a bifurcation, beyond which both arms are distorted and broken; they appear originally to have curved around the missing crossbar. A Polden Hill brooch, of folded ends type, with most of the spring and pin missing. Three incomplete coils of the spring are loosely attached to the axis bar. Three grooves at the outer ends of the wings. In place of a rear-facing hook there is a forward facing notch-like one. This was probably once a pierced lug and has been reworked, perhaps after damage. It is noteworthy that the top of the bow is entirely flat, perhaps filed down. The bow is of pentagonal section, with sharp median arris. The foot terminal is kicked forward. Wingspan 22.5mm. Length 28.5mm. Mid 1st century.

Roman copper alloy Adlocutio applied disc brooch. The brooch is copper alloy with a damaged and incomplete thin repousse plate. Only the lower half of the plate survies, however a large amount of the design is visible. A mounted figure is advancing toward three standard bearers. The horses forelegs are raised, and the main body of the horse is covered by a circular shield (For a more complete example of this design see Hattatt (1987) Brooches of Antiquity, page 193 plate 1 no 1080b). Roman copper alloy headstud brooch, hinged pin, rear part of head, riveted headstud and small parts of the catchplate missing. Top of crest or rib above head decorated with engraved ladder pattern. On both wings three lozengiform cells of blue enamel between two sets of four triangular cells of red enamel. The D-sectioned bow is similarly decorated with fourteen lozenges and two rows of fifteen triangles. The foot consists of transverse mouldings with a row of fine vertical engraved lines. Enamel inlay on the underside of the foot is missing. Wingspan 17.5mm. Length 38mm. c.75 - c.200 AD.

Rather fine Aesica brooch of ‘closed’ form. The wings are semi-cylindrical, open at the back for the (missing) spring, and with a rear-facing hook in the centre.
