An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a pin from a buckle or brooch of uncertain date. It is missing its tip due to old breaks. The attachment end has a flattened oval loop with central circular aperture. This tapers towards the shaft of the pin, where there is a largeflattened triangular projection that extends forwards at an angle of 45 degrees from the pin. The shaft of the pin is circular in section and tapers slightly before terminating in old breaks. A virtually complete Roman cast copper-alloy umbonate disc brooch dating to the late 1st/2nd century AD. The brooch is domed and broadly circular, with protrusions at the cardinal points. The largest of these knops conceals the double semicircular lug in which the pin is still retained by its axis bar. The pin is slightly corroded and has lost its tip. Opposite, on the longest axis, a knop conceals a catchplate of sub-rectangular shape and slightly abraded. The other two projections are small and rounded by comparison. The brooch has lost its spring mechanism and concomitant pin; the catchplate is also very abraded. Romano-British gilt copper alloy Rosette brooch, pin and catchplate missing. Made from three separate elements apart from the spring/pin. The head, decorated with multiple vertical grooves, is cast in one with three sub-elements: the pointed oval sectioned bow, decorated with six longitudinal grooves, three inlaid with silver wire; the basal disc decorated with zig-zag lines, alternating triangles filled with pinched dots; and the foot, decorated in the same manner as the bow. Single ring of punched elongated S-shaped stamps. Cf. Hattatt no. 1214 and Mackreth 1996, fig. 99 no. 80. Diameter 23mm. Mackreth (op. cit., 321-2) argued that such brooches were manufactured towards the end of the 2nd century and in the first quarter or half of the 3rd. Bayley and Butcher (2004, 178-9) suggested that production may have continued into the 4th century.

Romano British knee brooch of atypical form, rear parts of lateral lugs in spring housing, spring, pin and part of catchplate missing. A crack runs across the circular head. On its front a crescentic recessed area is empty and there is no sign of inlay. At the base of the D-sectioned bow a sub-circular foot projects forward and at its rear the line of the bow is continued as a broken stub. This must have continued as the catchplate. Length 31mm. Width of head 14mm. Width of foot 12mm. 2nd century.

Foot of brooch missing, although this may have been flaring in the manner of an Aesica brooch, 1st century.

Romano British sprung Dolphin brooch, spring, pin and almost all of perforated catchplate missing, wings decorated with four vertical double wavy lines in counter relief. D-shaped bow with median line of similar mouldings. Beneath the junction of wings and bow there is a pronounced thickening, and immediately above this and beneath the rear hook a moulded blind hole is larger and deeper than normal. Patches of solder at both ends of the spring housing. A large and heavy (20.13g) example. Wingspan 35mm. Length 69mm. c.43 – c.65 AD.

The complete but squashed catchplate behind the rib and knob is very short (6mm) unlike most Hod Hills, but comparable with the ‘Fiddle’ type (Hattatt 57-9). c.43 – 70 AD.

A worn, incomplete copper-alloy Aucissa derivative bow brooch of Roman date. It is missing the pin, axis bar and one of the wings due to old breaks. The terminal of the bow is rolled backwards to form a cylindrical aperture that would have held the now missing iron axis bar. Traces of the axis bar can just be seen in the one surviving wing. Below the terminal is a flat rectangular head plate that has circular perforations at each side and transverse moulding above and below.
