Brooch has a broad, semi-circular head with two narrow, decorative ridges around the outer edge of the semi-circle. Remains of pin hinge present. The centre of the bow broadens to a flattened, heart-shaped plate with three dots moulded into it. Pin, foot and catchplate missing. Roman brooch; incomplete cast copper alloy dolphin brooch of 1st century date. The brooch has long, narrow wings and a gap in the centre at the back for the pin hinge. The bow is also narrow and has a deep curve at the head, then tapers to a point at the foot. Much of the catchplate is still present behind the foot. The pin is missing. The brooch is oval in shape with a raised central cell containing an oval black glass stone which, although now broken, was originally tapered towards the centre into a cone shape. Only the head and a small fragment of the bow survive, which are in poor condition, so it is not possible to classify the brooch with confidence although based on the flared form of the head and linear decoration on the bow, it has been classified as being of probable Langton Down type.
