18th-20th century curved decorative fragment possibly from a brooch.A curved, decorative fragment, confirmed as not Roman by a Romano-British specialist; its exact function unclear, but possibly part of a brooch. Though Renaissance in ornament-style, it appears to be a modern cast, and thus dateable post-1706. As such, this object does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

The object is a silver penny of the Short Cross coinage which has been converted into a brooch. The coin was originally a silver penny of Short Cross class 5bi, issued in 1205 under King John. The moneyer was Pieres operating at Durham: the reverse inscription +PIERES.ON.DVR is virtually complete. The coin would have been produced to the established standard of the English medieval coinage, over 90% fine silver. The penny has been substantially altered and it could no longer be a functioning coin. The central section with the main design (king's head on the front, short double cross…

This consists of grooves, alternating with small, circular punches, to create the effect of twisted wire. The pin is intact and is held within a recess in the frame. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
