An early-medieval to medieval lead-alloy shield brooch dating from AD 1050 - AD 1175, of Weetch type 26. The brooch is an elongated drop shape, or kite shaped. The outer face is decorated with five pellets, the centre one larger, equi-distantly spaced, forming a saltire with a pellet in the centre. The central pellet is surrounded by a ring of smaller pellets, with similar arcs round each of the other main pellets. There is a vertical band of decoration in the form of a column of pellets with a high-relief double strand either side. There is a matching horizontal band crossing through…

A lead alloy probable brooch fragment which is probably from the mid Early Medieval period. The fragment is a sub rectangular flat plate with one end rounded, and the other end broken with the majority of the brooch missing. The fragment is divided into two panels by a transverse raised bar. There seems to be a plain border round each panel, and interlace patterns within. The reverse is plain and flat apart from two lugs at the rounded end. These were probably originally pierced to hold the pin bar, but are now corroded and the bar and pin are missing. It is probably part of a middle S…

A lead alloy brooch of Weetch's type 4.A, which dates to the late Anglo-Saxon period (10th century). The brooch is a flat circular disc with a diameter of 39.1mm, and is a maximum of 11mm thick including the pin fittings. There is an area missing from one edge. The front of the brooch is decorated in relief with three concentric circles round the edge, then a band decorated with raised circles, then two concentric circles, a band decorated with depressed ovals and the centre is divided into quadrants by a raised straight-armed cross with a projecting boss in the very centre. Very fine lead alloy disc brooch. The brooch face is circular and raised, circa 25mm in diameter, and flares rearwards to circa 32mm in diameter. The brooch is hollow when viewed from the reverse. The central flat panel of the brooch is openwork, comprising an irregular, tightly banded interlace pattern of probable animal parts. There are two triangular panels on the frame edge each containing three pellets. The edge of the central panel is beaded, as is the outer perimeter of the brooch. There are two integral D-shaped perforated lugs on the outer perimeter, perhaps for attachment; t…

Openwork, domed circular brooch (bent in two). Concentric rings with central beaded cross and struts saltirewise; beading on border. Compare NLM-A6CCD1, NLM395, etc, on this database. Weetch type 13.D, with parallels in 12th- and 13th-century contexts in York and Beverley; apparently a northern English type. Weetch dates it to the 11th century onwards.

Fragment of a circular lead brooch, very worn. triangular geometic pattern around the outer edge with a circular wave pattern inside the inner circle of the brooch. dimensions: 29.1mm, width 17.2mm thickness 2mm, weight 4.17g. This brooch was allocated by Rosie Weetch to Type 32, unknown/other plate brooch, but from the drawing it seems as if it must be a Type 13, the stepped type. These date to the 11th century.

An incomplete, lead-alloy, late Anglo-Saxon, or Anglo-Scandinavian, disc brooch. The brooch is circular and is slightly domed on its front and concave on the reverse. The front is decorated with relief moulding, consisting of a circumference of raised pellets and a non-geometric design within it. The area of the central design is subject to a large amount of white, powdery corrosion, probably due to the deterioration of the tin content of the alloy (commonly referred to as 'tin pest'), and is difficult to interpret. On the back of the brooch, the integrally-moulded catch plate surv…
