The object is a silver penny of the Short Cross coinage which has been converted into a brooch. The coin was originally a silver penny of Short Cross class 5bi, issued in 1205 under King John. The moneyer was Pieres operating at Durham: the reverse inscription +PIERES.ON.DVR is virtually complete. The coin would have been produced to the established standard of the English medieval coinage, over 90% fine silver. The penny has been substantially altered and it could no longer be a functioning coin. The central section with the main design (king's head on the front, short double cross…

A small medieval silver annular brooch with twisted frame. The frame is decorated with a line of pellets between the ridges. The pin is intact though missing its terminal. As this find was made before the Treasure Act 1996 came into force, it would have fallen under Treasure Trove legislation. In order to qualify as Treasure an object had to be believed to have been buried with the intent of recovery. This brooch is likely to be the product of a casual loss, and therefore does not meet the criteria for Treasure.
