Copper alloy horse brooch. The brooch is in the form of a horse galloping right. The horse has a moulded mane although it is very worn and no detail can be seen. The head features are also very worn and all that can be seen is a slight moulded oval representing the eyes. At the shoulders there is a moulded bevelled ridge. The body is slender and decorated with a horizontal row of eight circular holes, two of which are filled with blue enamel. The front and rear leg is broken around the knee. The tail is half complete. Copper alloy umbonate brooch. The brooch is circular and domed with a suspension loop at one end and a lug at the other. The centre of the brooch has a recessed dot missing its enamel setting. A band of ten triangular cells fan out from the central dot in a sunburst fashion. These cells contain red enamel, however two random cells appear to have blue enamel. Beyond this there is another band of ten triangular cells alternating with red and blue enamel. There is a lug for a hinged pin on the reverse and a catchplate.

Copper alloy dolphin brooch. The brooch has semi-cylindrical wings in cross-section with fully rounded and pierced terminals. The wings contain a copper alloy spring, and are decorated on their faces by two sets of rope-like designs. One wing face is pierced. The pin is missing. The bow is triangular in cross-section and is decorated with a moulded ridge. The bow tapers to a flat reeled foot. Catchplate intact.

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman bow and fantail brooch. The triangular fan shaped leg is all that survives of the brooch, which is broken just below the bow. This type belongs to Hull’s ‘Celtic type 36 since the leg is decorated with a Celtic broken back scroll pattern in relief (Hattatt, IARB, 1985, P117-8, No. 461). None of the enamel remains in the empty cells. The back of the leg has a short catchplate with a length of 13.1mm and the width is 4.3mm. The surviving length of the brooch is 23.1mm, the maximum width is 10.2mm and the weight is 2.10g.

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy roman bow brooch. The bow and foot fragment is all that survives of the brooch. The incomplete bow has a vertical rib running down the centre. At the base of the bow are three transverse grooves. The foot knob has two transverse ribs along it. Some of the catchplate still remains. The surviving length is 23.8mm, the width is 4.7mm and the weight is 2.18g.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman flat disc brooch. The incomplete disc has a riveted central raised boss with six smaller raised pellets around it. Around some of the smaller bosses are traces of green enamel. The back of the brooch has a single perforated lug and a broken catchplate. The pin is missing. The diameter is 19.4mm and the weight is 3.25g A similar example can be found in Hattat (1987, P.173, No.1047) though this example has lugs around the edge of the disc.

A cast copper-alloy roman dolphin brooch. The cylindrical wings conceal an axis bar with a hinged pin mechanism. The pin is now missing. The wings are decorated with a single rib at each end. The arched bow tapers to a point and has two slots for enamel, though no enamel remains. The surface of the brooch is covered in a bright green patina and there are some traces of tinning along the wings. The short catchplate is incomplete and measures 11.3mm in length and 3.4mm in width. The complete length of the brooch is 26.9mm, the width is 23.7mm and the weight is 5.27g.

Copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch. The brooch is very worn and is shown in profile to the right. The legs are missing, and the tail area and the perimeter of the head are very abraded. The body is decorated with a single curve towards the rear end representing the hip of the animal. The neck of the animal is very short and the head has a snout and worn ears. The animal would appear to be a hare, although the rear end of the animal would seem to be larger than normally portayed on hare brooches. The reverse of the brooch has an area reserved for the pin and catchplate, however …

No enamel remains within the recessed bands. Just above the break in the bow is the beginning of a recessed rectangle containing a row of moulded lozenges. No enamel remains in the recesses. The foot and the pin are missing.

The foot narrows slightly and has two raised transverse bands with three troughs forming a decorative collar before the terminal of the foot. Catchplate on reverse. Spring and pin missing.
