Treasure reference number 2013 T5: Fragment of a Roman silver trumpet brooch, dating circa 75-150 AD. All that survives is the central section of the bow which features the acanthus moulding. The head and upper bow have broken off, therefore exposing the hollow section of the upper bow. The break is jagged and irregular, and is patinated the same colour as the rest of the brooch. Two bands decorate the circumference of the bow just prior to the break. The acanthus moulding is formed from a lozenge shaped section, with three 'leaves' flaring outward and down either side of a ridg…

Simple one piece-brooch, Nauheim-derivative type with a flat broadly ovoid bow, undecorated, made of sheet metal, which narrows to a wire that forms a simple loop and the pin, both of circular cross-section. The catchplate is missing. Discussion: the brooch is so small it seems unlikely to have had much practical use, suggesting it was produced for symbolic reasons. For discussion of brooches of this type see Bayley & Butcher 2004, 146-8. For a parallel, see Hattatt 1987, no. 737. Date: late first century BC to early first century AD Wt.: 1.42g L.: 26.2mm W.: 6.6mm …

Silver possible Brooch fragment. Beaten silver sheet fragment of thickness 0.3mm with a border of a finely rendered cable pattern set in a gully between ridges, and with elements of three of a series of drawn wire quatrefoils within this border. A plain segment masks the junction of two differently aligned elements of the border, suggesting that this, like the internal design, may be applied to the sheet. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 17.2mm, Width: 6.2mm, Thickness (overall): 1.0mm, Weight: 0.37gms.

A silver-gilt possible fragment of a brooch. The object is sub-conical, the tip surmounted by a small knop. A large circular opening in the body connects two of the flatter sides; one of the other sides displays crude carved floral decoration, with a patch of green corrosion where it may have joined another piece of metal, and the final side has carved decoration and small impressed dots. The base shows signs of a break and is hollow. Dimensions: Height: 9 mm Width: 7 mm Thickness: 6 mm Weight: 0.76 g Discussion: Presumably this piece is the base of a pin from a Post-Medieva…

18th-20th century curved decorative fragment possibly from a brooch.A curved, decorative fragment, confirmed as not Roman by a Romano-British specialist; its exact function unclear, but possibly part of a brooch. Though Renaissance in ornament-style, it appears to be a modern cast, and thus dateable post-1706. As such, this object does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Cast silver square section ring (1.75-2.1mm square) with fastening gear behind comprising a hinge for the pin (lost) and a wire loop opposite, with a pressed copper alloy concavo-convex badge fitted tightly into the ring. The ring has butted ends and may have been crimped about the badge, which was presumably also soldered in place. The badge motif comprises a five petalled floral boss in a wreath on the ground of a finely rayed eight pointed star, probably taken from a military cap badge.
