Treasure reference number 2013 T5: Fragment of a Roman silver trumpet brooch, dating circa 75-150 AD. All that survives is the central section of the bow which features the acanthus moulding. The head and upper bow have broken off, therefore exposing the hollow section of the upper bow. The break is jagged and irregular, and is patinated the same colour as the rest of the brooch. Two bands decorate the circumference of the bow just prior to the break. The acanthus moulding is formed from a lozenge shaped section, with three 'leaves' flaring outward and down either side of a ridg…

Simple one piece-brooch, Nauheim-derivative type with a flat broadly ovoid bow, undecorated, made of sheet metal, which narrows to a wire that forms a simple loop and the pin, both of circular cross-section. The catchplate is missing. Discussion: the brooch is so small it seems unlikely to have had much practical use, suggesting it was produced for symbolic reasons. For discussion of brooches of this type see Bayley & Butcher 2004, 146-8. For a parallel, see Hattatt 1987, no. 737. Date: late first century BC to early first century AD Wt.: 1.42g L.: 26.2mm W.: 6.6mm …

A fragment of a copper alloy possible Roman knotenfibel brooch, possibly consisting of a fragment of the bow and openwork catchplate. Overall, the fragment measures 23.4mm long, 9.1mm wide and 2.5mm thick. It weighs 1.3g. The fragment consists of a cylindrical rod which divides in two, one part continuing as a rod on the same axis as the main rod and the other part becoming flat and curving away. The fragment's surface is damaged revealing its core that appears to have a high tin content. It was submitted for consideration as Treasure, but has been declared as not Treasure.
