Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast fragment from a flat plate with part of a relief design on its display face; three adjacent pellets of which one is larger than the others and a curved line above them with uncertain extensions and intersecting a cabled border. Patinated overall. This fragmentary motif might derive at its earliest, from a Viking-Age plate brooch displaying Christian symbols; or a cheap medieval brooch; or a pilgrim badge of an indeterminate cult centre - oriented as illustrated, the eye of faith might discern Christ hanging on the cross to be the subject. Sugg…

A cast lead-alloy disc brooch of the post-Medieval period.
The brooch is decorated in relief, but the choice of lead alloy has meant that there is little crisp detail in the decoration. There is a simple band as an outer border, with the field decorated with three figures (a man, a bird, and a beast) with a P in the middle.
The reverse has lugs to take a hingepin and the base of the catchplate.

Copper alloy brooch. Cast concavo-convex sub-rectangular plate with a [now] plain central field bordered by a pelleted line and a series of juxtaposed U-shaped ovulos also outlined by fine pellets. The motifs may indicate an acquaintance with Neo-Classical decorative forms. Opposed U-shaped lugs at the end presumably retained a bar or pin which was perhaps hinged on one of the ends and passed into the other. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900

Lead alloy and glass brooch. Small cast trefoil openwork brooch of clover-leaf form with a small stalk below and with a low central collet retaining a semi-translucent glass stone of a green tint with a blue spot. Traces of white metal plating appear on the display face. A small soldered gutter set centrally on the back marks the site of a pin or other fixing. Probably costume jewellery or a ‘fairing’ or item of trinket jewellery. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950

A cast, lead alloy, openwork artefact, possibly a brooch, of uncertain date. It is oval in shape and is pierced with an openwork lattice design. There is a central, raised dot and a series of fourteen raised dots spaced equidistantly around the rim. On the reverse, at one end of the oval is a small, integral loop. At the other end are the remains of what might possibly have been a catchplate. There is no pin remaining. It is 35.2mm long, 31.6mm wide and 6mm thick. It weighs 11.48gm. It has become slightly distorted over time. There are some annular brooches which seem similar on page …

Lead alloy possible brooch. Cast flat ring with a central hole of diameter 15mm with a cut and bent edge suggesting knife-trimming or the removal of a central boss. A pelloidal texture appears on both flat sides, though whether this is a design, the melted relict of a design, or simply heat damage, is uncertain. This object may relate to medieval base metal trinkets, perhaps made in imitation of costume jewellery such as a brooch or annular brooch, made in more precious materials. Incomplete lead-alloy disc brooch of probable 11th-century date. Just over half the brooch survives, with a deep crack in the middle. The surviving part measures 39 x 23mm and the original diameter was probably c. 39mm. It measures 7mm in height and weighs 7.6g.
The brooch has a stepped profile, with a narrow flanged beaded border. The centre is raised above this border, with an angled, undecorated area forming the step. The flat centre has relief decoration of a central boss surrounded by a double ridge, the inner slightly bolder. Springing from the outer ridge are two of what may…

Possibly Lead Alloy or Base Silver, possibly with gemstone.
Possible Disc Brooch. Cast flattened plano-convex flan with a central perforation circa 3mm square, with hammered or stamped motifs on both sides. On the convex side there is a cruciform arrangement of finely billeted panels with strings of beads, rays and panels radiating between the arms. On the other side a rectangular cell of circa 4mm square, immediately adjacent to the central aperture, appears to retain a small white crystal or quartz stone. This lies off-centre within a finely beaded circle. The edges of the object…

A lead alloy circular brooch which probably dates from the late Early-Medieval period, 11th century. It has a diameter of 27.1mm and is 6.5mm thick including the dome; the metal is 1.6mm thick. The border consists of a raised line with a band of raised pellets on either side, larger ones on the outside. The centre of the brooch is domed and is decorated with a single ribbon consisting of two parallel raised lines which is twisted to form six loops grouped in pairs. There is a raised pellet in the centre, one between each pair of loops, one in the centre of each loop and a border forme…

An incomplete cast lead alloy object, possibly a fragment of a brooch dating from the early Early Medieval period (AD 400 - 600). The brooch is possibly a small square-headed type, but this identification is uncertain due to the fragmentary nature of the object. The fragment is roughly rectangular in plan with two original edges at a right angle, forming the outer edge of the object, and two broken edges. It is slightly bent and distorted, this was probably caused when it was broken. The front face of the object has relief decoration consisting of three equally spaced lines running pe…

A lead brooch of Weetch's type 4.C, dating to the early medieval period, c. AD 900 to 1000.
The object was originally circular and flat, but it has been folded and bent, probably through post-depositional processes. The back of the object has the lugs and pin catch which would have formed part of the mechanism. The pin is missing. The front of the object has cast decoration with a central raised pellet with two collars surrounding it. Around the central motif is a double lozenge shape with concave sides. At each point is a small rectangle with a row of pellets within. All of this d…

Parts of two slightly expanding arms with horizontal or vertically ribbed infill, and with a pellet at the centre, appear on the front. An indistinct circle appears in the angle of the arms. Lead alloy and glass probable brooch fragment. Cast disc brooch with an irregular central inset of (now) brick red glass. Faint traces of further textured decoration appears on what is now worn to a plain field. The edges of the object are damaged, probably recently, about two thirds of the way around the circumference of the plate. Separate fastening gear or attachment loops are now lost. Cheap lead alloy brooches are characteristic of Viking Age settlement of lower status. A variety of examples are reported from Lurk Lane, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire (Tweddle, D. 1991, Brooch…

Late Early Medieval lead alloy disc brooch of Weetch's type 4.B, 19mm in diameter, 5mm thick and weighing 5.35grams. The brooch has four raised 'petal' like motifs arranged in a quatrefoil. This is surrounded by a solid double raised border filled with rounded pellets. The reverse of the brooch has two semi-circular lugs aligned parallel to each other and joined by two raised bars to each edge, giving the overall effect of a shallow box fitting.
The brooches decoration fits Weetch type 4.B, which are dated to the 11th century and have an eastern distribution, suggesting possible ma…

Lead alloy brooch fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast or mis-cast head of a small long brooch with head of cross potent form, and with rust around the stub of a lug on the back suggesting the former presence of an iron pin mounted behind the head. Fiercely abraded, and possibly partly melted; a small [length 12mm] fragment broke away during examination, probably a sad relict of the upper part of the bow. This may have been an object intended to substitute for a ‘real’ or working copper alloy version, perhaps used to close or complete an Anglian burial costume. The e…
