Fantail, bow brooch of the Roman period. Copper alloy. The head consists of a small tubular crossbar in which the pin is hinged. Aboce the brooch is a loop to hold a chain. The bow is narrow with two vertical grooves running down in decoration. Below this the brooch flares to a flat traingular foot. This bears a motif of double trumpet or bud shape, the lines of decoration neeting forming a diamond pattern at the top of the foot. The decoration is silvered. The catchplate lies behind the centre of the flared foot.

A copper alloy Roman bow brooch. The brooch is 35.3mm long, 11.7mm wide and 20.3mm deep. It was probably a trumpet brooch, but it is damaged, possibly by fire causing melting, and the type of brooch is no longer clear. The pin and mechanism are missing but traces of the catchplate survive. The foot is tilted forwards. There are bumps in the middle of the bow which may be the remains of an acanthus button. Incomplete cast copper alloy heastud brooch. The brooch has cylindrical wings in cross section containing an axis bar for a hinged pin. The pin is missing. The wing faces are flat and decorated with vertical ribs. There is an incomplete suspension loop at the top. The bow is comma shaped in plan and broken about half way down its length. There is a moulded pellet-in-ring at the top of the bow, in and around which is blue enamel. Below the headstud is a rectangular panel decorated with a serise of lozenge shaped cells. The cells and their surrounding fields are filled with blue enamel.

The pin is incomplete and housed within a cut notch between the two rolled cylindrical casings. The axis bar holding the pin is made from iron. 2nd to 3rd century copper alloy Roman brooch. Hattatt describes this brooch as an oval brooch with intaglio, though the intaglio is missing from this example. The brooch is oval in plan and has a moulded, raised outer rim, 2mm wide, and a moulded raised inner oval rim, within which the missing intaglio would have been fixed. The surface of the brooch shows traces of silvering or tinning. There are no traces of enamel between the outer and inner, but it is likely that enamel was present originally. There is a flat semi-circular panel below that is instepped from the bow. The foot is missing though on the reverse of the semi-circular panel there is a flaring raised panel containing the top of the catchplate. This panel is likely to have formed a flat triangular foot.
