Copper alloy Plate Brooch. Cast rectangular plate with a central drilled aperture of diameter 3.3mm. The aperture falls in the middle of an equal armed cross with very slightly flaring arms. The design comprises sunken fields, each arm being 2.1mm wide, each with a central cabled or billeted rib 1.2mm wide standing in relief. A sunken compartment circa 4mm square is set in each angle of the cross; two opposed compartments are empty, the other pair are filled by a ground of blue enamel with a central round field of white enamel and a central round dot of red enamel. It appears possible…

Copper alloy and iron brooch fragment. Cast trapezoid plate with a collared knop to either side of its wider end, the stub of an indeterminate feature loop above, and a flat lug on the back retaining the corroded stub of an iron pin or spring. The display face of the plate bears moulded vertical flutes converging towards its broken narrower end. Although a top loop and collared knops might usually denote a Roman brooch, the iron pin gear may suggest a later date. The form might alternatively ally this to the Continental series of Roman plate brooches. Suggested date: Unknown Roman to …

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast fragment from a flat plate with part of a relief design on its display face; three adjacent pellets of which one is larger than the others and a curved line above them with uncertain extensions and intersecting a cabled border. Patinated overall. This fragmentary motif might derive at its earliest, from a Viking-Age plate brooch displaying Christian symbols; or a cheap medieval brooch; or a pilgrim badge of an indeterminate cult centre - oriented as illustrated, the eye of faith might discern Christ hanging on the cross to be the subject. Copper alloy annular brooch. Cast narrow band annular brooch with a band which is beaded on its display side and flat on the back, retaining a cast collared pin which is looped around the frame. Rust staining of the surface is prominent on the display side though the object was tested with a magnet to confirm its non-ferrous nature. The narrow band annular brooch is a feature of later, generally late 6th to 7th-century, Early Anglo-Saxon furnished burials of adult women, though objects of much the same form enjoyed a renewed popularity in the high medieval period. Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast discoid plate retaining paired lugs for a probably iron spring and an opposed catch plate. Extensive rust on the back may arise from decay of the pin and may incorporate mineral preserved textile traces. The front bears the bordered relict of a curvilinear design in which a reflective spot of enamel appears. This could perhaps suggest a brooch of Weetch type 18, c. AD800-900, though earlier plate brooches include the use of enamel in more symmetrical arrangements. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 100-1000 Diameter: 28.6mm, Thickness (pl…

Most of a folded catch plate projects from behind the lower bow. Probably from a small cruciform or small long brooch, though its poor condition and some accompanying material might permit this to come from a late Roman brooch of uncertain form - the knee brooch series is perhaps the most likely candidate. Copper alloy Brooch. Dolphin Brooch, cast bow with abraded ridges on its crest, surmounting enclosed tubular wings with apparently open ends. A bow of rounded section tapers towards the stub of a catch-plate. It is not clear whether the wings conceal a fine spring, or whether a hinged pin protruded from a slot in the underside of the wings. The bow is bent sharply above catch-plate and the brooch abraded overall. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-80. Copper alloy brooch. Fragment of a cast composite trumpet brooch derivative, as identified by finder. An expanded bow with circular concavity indicates a two-piece construction; the fastening mechanism (now lost) was presumably engaged with this hollow. The upper bow is modestly expanded, and narrows to meet a heavily moulded group of three ridges; with the second and third ridges separated by a deep trough, as a dramatic departure from the mid-bow acanthus leaf decoration of the usual trumpet brooch type. Copper alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast and curving strip with a ridge on its convex surface, possibly slightly expanded at its ends if this does not arise from its breakage in antiquity. This may derive from the bow of a small Romano-British brooch, for example a 1st-century strip bow brooch such as the Hod Hill, Langton Down or Aucissa types, though other identifications are equally possible. Copper alloy Brooch. Two piece Colchester Brooch fragment. Cast brooch with strip bow bearing a billeted medial ridge, tapering from a hump over semi-tubular wings. A perforated forward-facing hook at the head was perhaps originally designed to engage the chord of a spring, and has another perforated plate beneath it to hold an axis bar. However, this usual arrangement may have been modified; evidence for this lies at the foot of the brooch. The catch-plate is moulded rather than folded, and is of unusual thickness with a circular hole which appears countersunk from the side w…

Copper alloy, trace of tinning Brooch fragment. Fragment of a cast Hod Hill variant Brooch, comprising elongated rhomboid lower bow with catch-plate on reverse. The catch-plate bears a circular perforation of diameter1.9mm, which is perhaps fortuitously formed. The bow continues as a narrow strip above a simple central moulding. Trace of tinning remains on display face. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-80. Length: 46.5mm, Width: 11.4mm, Thickness (at moulding): 3.6mm, Weight: 3.23gms.

Copper alloy Brooch fragment. Headstud Brooch. Cast bow with stub of top-loop (lost) and a triangular-section housing retaining the stub of a swivelling pin. A small stud with a cross in relief adorns the crest of bow; below this a medial ridge bears laterally billeted decoration within a rectilinear panel. A basal collar separates the bow from a slightly expanded flat-bottomed foot. A folded catch-plate is retained at back of bow. The brooch is shiny and dark, perhaps from Vaseline. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200. Length: 41.6mm, Width (head): 14.6mm, Thic…

Copper alloy Brooch. Dolphin Brooch. Cast head, upper bow and hollow tubular wings of a hinged bow brooch. The wings entirely enclose a copper alloy axis bar, which is revealed where part of the tubular casing has broken. The wings are decorated at their ends by an incised - or possibly crimped when enclosing the axis bar - slot with billeting adjacent to it. The crest of the bow is adorned by a deep medial slot with a central billeted ridge standing proud. Suggested date: Early Roman, 60-80, Length (along bow): 25.5mm, Width (wings): 40.6mm, Thickness: (crest of…

Copper alloy Brooch. Cast variant of Trumpet Brooch; the upper part of bow resembles a small knee brooch, but other characteristics ally this to Trumpet Brooches or Trumpet Headed forms. A hook projects back from over a single coil of a spring (otherwise lost), behind a small rectangular plate or vestigial wings. The upper bow is markedly expanded, resembling that of a knee brooch, but narrows towards a central collared moulding. The lower bow descends to a small moulded foot, with a pierced catch-plate bearing two round apertures of diameter 1.2mm. Suggested date: Early Roman, 1…
